Hi Lonlydog, I'm sorry to hear about your dobie. How come he had an amputation?
There is a GREAT cone alternative that we just had to use with our Wyatt. It's a big foam donut thing. I doubt you'll find it at a pet store; instead, start calling around to surgical centers, that's where we got ours.
Poor Wyatt had to wear a cone and the donut at night because he is such a long dog that he could reach his hind end with just the cone. You may find that your dobie can pull that trick too, so use care.

Hi Lonlydog,
So sorry to hear about your sweet dobbie's cancer and surgery. Have you tried putting a t-shirt on him if he is a front amp or boxer shorts if he is a rear amp? I found the t-shirts gave Lupe something else to focus on besides her incision (she was a front amp) and I have seen posts both others where boxers did the trick for rear amps.
Keep us posted on how all are doing!
Take care,

My Dobie was quite the "licker" too. I actually had to buy a muzzle because he wouldn't wear a cone either. I felt horrible putting it on him but it did work. I bought the big plastic basket kind so they can drink water and throw up and not choke if need be.
Good joke lol
Levi was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma 7-7-11
Ampuversary 10-14-11
Lung Mets Discovered 1-4-12. Chemo seemed to not be working so we switched to Artemisinin and other supplements. In May, Levi developed a sinus infection and started having seizures. The cancer had moved to his brain. We let him go 6-26-12.
Sorry you had to find us here. We did the soft, flowery looking cone like the photo above, or t-shirts for our Abby. I would put her in small size sleeves T's and pin them up in the back so they'd stay snug and she couldn't get them off to go after her incision.
Funny joke! (Won't suggest it to my hubby though...)

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman.
