Hi - chest x-rays were clear, so surgery tomorrow for Mr. Fuzzy face Clyde. I've been searching around the website for a list or something of things I should have for him when he gets home, and my apologies if one exists, but I can't find it. I've seen reference to bedding (firm dog bed, he already has those), carpet runners (I'm going to have to get those, most of my little house is hardwood) and extra towels. Has anyone tried those little plastic tips for their claws to prevent slipping? Not that I care about having a bunch of carpet runners, but the little paw tips might be more practical?

Any other suggestions as to what I should have?

I'm also trying to figure out the car ride home. Luckily its really short - but I'll be picking him up on my own and I'm afraid of him toppling over in the car. I'm thinking big comforter to block the foot wells once he's in the car so he can't fall into them. Maybe I'm overthinking this...so nervous, I'm going to be a wreck until I pick him up on Saturday.

I do recommend a quiet recovery space. Sadie will be one week into recovery tomorrow and she sleeps a LOT. Which is fine -- I'm worn out by the stress, so I'm sleeping a lot, too! I have carpet runners, but she's barely been out of her recovery room to use them.

You'll also need something to give pills with, whatever works for Clyde. Sadie's getting her pills with sandwich meat and gobbles them right up.

Alrighty, you have lpts of links and input for setting up for Clyde's homecoming.

Now, for YOU...lpts of CHOCOLATE, ice cream, junk food, wine if you drink...wine if you don't drink, now's a good time to start!way-cool

Keep your vet's number handy.

Keep our helpline number close at hand: 844 TRIPAWDS

Maybe keep some waterproof pads under Clyde for the first night or two. Sometimes, not always, they maybe so druggy that they have accidents in their bed.

Maybe a baf or two of frozedn pees should the vet recommend icing if need be for excessive swelling and bruising. Of course, only for a few minutes and with a towel inbetween.

Lots of Clyde,s favorite foods as he may, or may not have much kf an appetite. You'll also want to have things like hot dogs, or cream cheese, etc to hide his pain meds in.

The vet will most likely send Clyde home with Tramadol, Gabapentin, Rimadyl and an antibiotic. Sometimes after hospital pain meds are out of their system in two or three days, they have a bit of a crash. Getti g the pain meds balanced can be a bit tricky for a day or two. Some vets send dogs home with aTramadol fentanyl latch...some don't.

Clyde may not poop for a few days, that's okay. It's more important that he pee. Should he become constipated, a couple of tablespoons of natural pumpkin (not pie filling) should help move things along.

If possible, try and get someone to ride with you to pick him up. I had over an hour ride home with just myself and Happy Hannah and my Bodie dog. It was a ride from h*ll!

When you pock Clyde up, don't even bother looking at his incision..he sure isn't! Just look into his druggy eyes and applaud him and tell him what a good boy he is! Must to prepare you as you "don't look at his incision",they shave a lot.of fur!!

Update is when surgery is over. Stay connected! YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!

Hugs!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Hi there!

I think all major points are already covered, the only thing I would add is get him a t-shirt to protect the wound.

Eurydice had one on every day until the stitches came out, I also left the harness over the t-shirt every day (a soft harness), it helped enormously whenever she wanted to stand up and also to go out for pee and poo.

I'm not too convinced about plastic tips for claws, I would rather have carpets down in the areas she is likely to use. Also, as she recovers her mobility she will tend to walk where they are. We've placed rubber underlay under the carpets so that they would not move.

Make sure she will lie on a nice and comfortable mattress in the car, we've got memory foam mattresses for my girl which are fantastic for her as she is quite heavy. All other kind of mattresses become pancake thin very, very quickly.

I am sure you are looking super hyper ultra forward to having Clyde back home, things will only get better!

Sending you lots of love and cuddles to gorgeous Clyde heart

Hi there.  I certainly agree with Sally.  Do not look at the incision but into your baby's eyes.  It makes all the difference in the world.  Bandit and Deb.

Finally got the call from my vet - surgery went well. He was last on the surgical schedule, so didn't go in until around 3:30. Vet said that he x-rayed the leg again before the surgery and it showed even more clearly the tumor, and its pretty clearly osteosarcoma. But we will still be having a biopsy done. I get to pick him up tomorrow - I'm so happy and nervous at the same time.

So glad surgery went well and he will be home soon!

Lisa and Pofi

Lisa, Minneapolis

On October 27, 2016, nearly 6 months after amputation, and 18 months since his cancer likely started, we lost Pofi to a recurrence of Soft Tissue Sarcoma in his spine quite suddenly.  His canine sister also succumbed to cancer on March 1, 2019 - we lavished her with our love in the interim, but life was never quite the same without her only real canine friend. Cliff kitty had to leave us, too, suddenly, in August 2019. Lucia kitty grieved all these losses, but helped us welcome two new Lurchers into our home and our lives, Shae and Barley.

Clyde's home! And stoned out of his doggy mind big-grinHe came home with a Fentanyl patch and antibiotics (he already has Tramadol and Rimadyl - the vet lowered his dose of Rimadyl because its really just for inflammation at this point, and I'm only to give Tramadol if needed). The vet techs helped him to the car - he really didn't want to move much. When I got him home, I couldn't figure out how to get him out - I ended up kind of pulling his hind end out and gently getting each remaining paw on the ground. It then took me about 15 minutes to get him from my car to the steps to the house (we are talking a very short walk) - he really wasn't interested in moving. The steps (there are just four) were also a challenge. I got him in and had him lay down  and went to get some stuff set up (my housekeeper came today so I wasn't able to really set up until I got him home). I turned around and he was back up on his own and hopping around on the hardwood floor without a problem! So I think he just didn't know how to try to move while being helped. He's now resting on his bed in an x-pen in my living room and I'm sitting in a chair by him. He came home with an Elizabethan collar but they said I didn't need to have it on him while I'm with him, so he's not wearing it now.

They said he ate a little this morning, I'll be giving him dinner in a few hours. Its hard to look at his wound - its not covered, but really does not look bad at all. My vet likes to let it be open to the air. It's just hard for me to get used to his new look. But he seems really okay so far. He definitely does not want me out of his sight, so I'm glad I already had an x pen and that he's really well crate trained.

And for those wondering about cost of this surgery (I know I was) - it was a little over $3500 including the two biopsies they will do (a lymph node and the bone biopsy). I consulted with a friend of a friend who is a veterinary oncologist at a specialty hospital in the general area, and he quoted me $4500 to $5000 not including biopsies, so I'm good with the cost. I'm in Southern California, so overall I'm happy with the cost and I know he received really good care while there.

I'll be having wine tonight for sure. And likely will be sleeping in the recliner by the x-pen.

Glad Clyde is home and surgery went well! So now your Tripawd journey begins! It can be scary and stressful, ours was, but it was also an awesome journey. Be prepared for ups and downs the next few weeks; take it one day at a time. My Dobe Nitro will be celebrating his 2 year ampuversary in a couple weeks....I've learned so much from him about strength, determination and courage. This great site and the people here got us through the hard times, and we'll be here for you too.

We slept on the floor with him the first couple nights, and I use the term "sleep" loosely - I maybe got 15 minutes total the first night. Make sure you keep a strict schedule with the pain meds, you want to keep ahead of the pain. Also, Nitro wouldn't eat for over a week - other than the yogurt we spooned down his throat for his pills; this was very stressful.

Good luck, and keep us posted.....maybe have a couple glasses of wine tonite! 🙂

Paula and Nitro

Nitro 11 1/2  yr old Doberman; right front amp June 2014. Had 6 doses carboplatin, followed by metronomic therapy. Rocked it on 3 legs for over 3 years! My Warrior beat cancer, but couldn't beat old age. He crossed the Bridge peacefully on July 25, 2017, with dignity and on his terms.  Follow his blog entitled "Doberman's journey"

Yay for Clyde! I hope he's making friends with the pink elephants.

Do consider sharing your amputation costs experience here in the Forums when you have a sec.

Do watch him like a hawk though when he's not wearing that cone. We've seen sutures destroyed in the blink of an eye. Hopefully he's still too dopey to care. I love that they gave him such great pain medication. Which clinic did you go to?

His surgery was done at Huntington Veterinary Hospital in Monrovia, Ca (which is a few miles east of Pasadena). Very pleased with the care he's received so far. He just ate some dinner; earlier I took him out and he peed forever - I think he's been holding it for awhile, he really doesn't like to go anywhere but our backyard. He's still really dopey and not to worry, I am watching him like a hawk! His collar will go back on when I try to sleep. He's also wearing a t-shirt now - somehow (probably while I had the front door wide open trying to get him into the house) a fly showed up and kept landing on him. I think I killed it but just to be safe, popped on the t-shirt. He's too stoned to care laughing
