Jet had his left front leg amputated 3 weeks ago after being diagnosed with osteosarcoma. His first chemo treatment was 9 days ago. His recovery seemed to be progressing when suddenly today he started crying out like he is in pain and it seems like his whole body is sensitive to touch. Can this be a side effect to the chemo or part of the healing process? Gave him half a Rymadyl and that doesn't seem to be helping. A few minutes ago he was standing near me and as I was scratching under his chin he suddenly started crying out like I was hurting him. Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi Susan-

I did not have that experince with chemo, but did have a similar reaction to a vaccination. It really makes you feel helpless. I would definitely check with your vet or onco. Our vet says it takes at least a week before the treatment really peaks so that could be a possibility.

Keep us updated.

We did not have that problem.  But could it be possibly phantom pains?  Some dogs get those?  Sassy didn't have that problem either so I can't be much help there.  I do know that a lot of people give Gabetain (horrible spelling) someone who might have experience with the drug will chime in.  Sounds more like phantom pains than something to do with chemo

Bless your neart! I know this is scarey and you feel pretty helpless.

I can ly say that I had Happy Hannah o pain meds i to three weeks and Gabapentin was the o e that seemed to work best in that third week.

Does Jett seem like he's trying to "move away" from the pain? If he gets up and move does it stop it momentariy?

Could he jave done any movement where he pulled or sprained something? Do you have any tramadol til you can get the vet to check him over.

Yeah, do a search on here for phatom pain and seeif it "fits".

Come back on as soo as you can and let us know howJet....SND YOU are doing!!

Deep breaths...... and eat some chocolate! this too shall pass!

Sending calm and peace to you!

Thank you Sally, your suggestion about chocolate made me smile and I needed that. Yes, when Jet yikes he acts like he's trying to get away from the pain. It seems like it is in his back legs and/or back. He did sleep through the night without incident but taking his out this am he did it again and started shaking. I'm worried about giving him Tramadol with the chemo. Have you done that?

Awe....poor Jet. I don't have experience but just wanted to send you our pawsitive thoughts.
Maybe he pulled a muscle or something? Could be side effects, could be phantom pain ?
My suggestion would be for the vet to check him out.

Keep us posted.

I kow this just stinks wnen your'e so anxious to have your Jet 100%! Oh gosh...and then they come over to you--"fix it momo, fix it"! Ugh!

I knew we all keep going back to sprained or pulled or pinched "something" ot yhe phantom pain thing. Probably by the time you get this you will already havecalled the vet. I imagine he will prescribe one of the pain meds...either tramadol or gabapentin.

Eating? Drinking? Pooping? Peeing? Walking fine sometimes but not when this pan thing strikes? Jet, you're keeping it a little too interesting for your mom! She's fine with jjst a nice ormal recovery, okay? Of course n this journey sprains and ulled muscles and phantom pai fall in the realm of "norm"! Rats!

Okay Susan, tonight's assignment is, again, eat chocolate AND drink a glass of wine! If you don't drink, now's a good time to start:-) :-)
Look over at Jet and say something that makes his tail wsg...now smile and hug him!

Will look for your updte. In the meantime, do you kow how to post pictures? We would love to see some of Jet! From the avatar he looks adorable!

I'm really sorry to hear about Jet's current situation, I hope he is feeling better by now. I'm thinking phantom pain too but really it would be best to ask your vet about this. Phantom pain could set in after 3 weeks but it could also be something else like a pulled muscle, which is pretty common in new Tripawds. To help your vet diagnose it, be sure to keep a log of his symptoms, when they occur and how he reacts, at least for a few days. Talk to your vet to see when it might be a good idea to have another exam, and this information will be a big help.

Meanwhile, I agree with Sally, let's see some photos! Here's something about adding images to your posts, I hope it helps!

I'm thinking this is a pulled muscle rather than phantom pain . His back, along the spine, was sensitive to touch on Saturday and he was favoring his back legs. Poor baby,I feel so bad for him, he just can't seem to catch a break.... But he's eating and eliminating normally and slept all night without crying out so I think it's getting better. We will be in touch with our vet today and will let you all know the results. Thank you, as always, for your support and suggestions. Our vet is wonderful but he has never lived with this on a daily basis and your insights are invaluable because they come from real life
