Hi everyone, I know this sounds a little Crazy but my yellow lab Tucker had his rear leg amputated at the End of January and so far, so good! The hair has completely grown back over his stump. My question is, yesterday after Tucker had been swimming in the lake (his favorite pastime!) I noticed that his stump looked dark. I looked a little closer and it appeared that his skin was black. Now, it could be that we have had great weather lately and he and our other dogs have spent a lot of time outside and it may just be dirty but he seemed like it might be a little painful. He didn't whine but he didn't want to hold still and let me look at it much. I was going to try and give him a bath tonight to see if it was just dirt but I didn't want to make too much of a fuss last night because I didn't want to upset my fiance if it has anything to do with his Cancer. Have you guys seen anything like this before?

I would call the vet ASAP... don't want to take a chance and wait if its an infection.

This is a little far out from surgery to be infection but I would still have it checked. Sometimes a dermatitis (skin condition) can change the skin color but antibiotics could still be needed.

Perhaps a silly question, but did you ever happen to notice it not being dark? After Jerry was shaved for his amputation, we discovered that Shepherds have dark skin where their dark fur grows.

I called the Vet and she didn't seem too concerned. She said to being him in one day this week and they would take a look at it. I am going to try and take him by tonight. I knew that it hadn't been black before because the other side of his tummy isn't that color, its only on the stump and since hes yellow all over he doesn't have any dark spots.

One thing I was wondering, could it be bruised? He tends to go 100 MPH even though I try to slow him down and he does fall a lot. Plus when he is outside playing with our other dogs he will lay on the concrete pad under our porch (even though we bought these wonderful water proof dog beds especially for outside!!!). Have any of you noticed that the stump area bruises easily?

Hmmmm, well, it's a thought, but to be safe I would take him in.

He sure sounds like our kinda dog! Fun!

Let us know what the vet says OK? This is a new one to us, we'd love find out what, if anything, it is. Hope it's nothing!
