I had originally intended to post this to Trouble's ongoing thread, but alas I wasn't smart enough to find it, or maybe the truth is I'm not patient enough to find it, lol. It has been a long while since I updated it. We've just been enjoying the wonderful time we have together.
Trouble had her six month post chemo checkup today. She got a great report with the exception of an elevated liver enzyme. Not so elevated that Dr F is overly concerned yet. He is thinking it is rimadyl related, and we are taking her off the rimyadyl for three weeks and switching to tramadol as a test. At the end of the three weeks, he will do another blood test to see if the numbers are coming down.
Her heart is strong, her lungs are strong, she is getting around well, she is eating and drinking normally. We are pleased. Not to worry YET about the liver.

Well, I would say this deserves a new topic! Hooray for Trouble!
Keep up the good work girl, and stay out of the whisky!

We are so happy to be able to offer that glimmer of hope for those coming along behind us. We don't know how long the good will continue to come to us, but we are thankful for each and every day.

Great report on Trouble! It's wonderful to read good news.
Debra & Emily
Debra & Emily, a five year old doberman mix, who was diagnosed with an osteosaecoma. She had a right rear leg amputation on May 19, 2009. On November 10, 2009 she earned her wings and regained her fourth leg.
The video was taken Easter weekend just a couple of weeks after she finished chemo. I'll have to try to get a new short clip, she's still doing just as well. She is a happy dog. I have a couple of clips of her running in the yard, but they are on the cell phone and not zoomed in enough to be very good.

Jake's Mom
Jake, 10yr old golden retriever (fractured his front right leg on 9/1, bone biopsy revealed osteosarcoma on 9/10, amputation on 9/17) and his family Marguerite, Jacques and Wolfie, 5yr old german shepherd and the newest addition to the family, Nala, a 7mth old Bengal mix kittie. Jake lost his battle on 11/9/2009, almost 8 weeks after his surgery. We will never forget our sweet golden angel… http://jakesjou.....ipawds.com ….. CANCER SUCKS!
Trouble had her follow-up blood check for the liver enzymes while she and Duke were boarded Monday. Had a long chat with Dr F as we were one the way home yesterday.
Good news - the enzymes are down, just a couple of points out of normal range, indication they Remadyl was the cause.
Bad news - we cannot use NSAIDS as long term maintenance treatment
He suggested I consider the Science Diet j/d formula which is suppose to be equal to Remadyl in terms of effects on arthritis. I of course started with the ingredients, this diet's main ingredient is corn, so any of you fighting allergies, don't even consider it.
I'm back to research, starting with this thread where we discussed the glucosamine made without shellfish. I would really prefer not to keep her on Tramadol long term if I can find a way around it.

Hi Shanna and Trouble
Glad to hear about the blood results. It is amazing how happy our mums get when our enzymes improve! At the same time, I know it is not fun to struggle to figure out food and drugs. Do you have her on glucosamine? That would be great if she was.
I had the impression that metacam was a bit harder on the kidneys than Rimadyl but Easier on the liver. I don't know for sure if that is true, but maybe something to ask the vet, although certainly he would have suggested it if this seemed worthwhile. My vet was going to switch me from metacam to Rimadyl for that reason (I have bad kidneys, and historically a good liver), although I did not want to start messing with the liver since it was beginning to creep up too.
Tazzie ate j/d for the last few years, until getting cancer when we switched to the no or low grain and high protein. Does j/d really provide enough glucosamine to make a difference? I don't know how much is in it, but I'd check. Darn, it is hard to juggle kidneys, livers, hearts and cancer!
This is my second week of the 'vegie flush'. My mum chops and boils vegies every day and I drink about 1.5 - 2 liters of vegie water a day. You can bet that I pee a lot too! I'll let you know how my liver and kidney enzymes are after we do blood work tomorrow. It will be interesting to see if it helps, even though that is not the reason we are doing this (we do it to avoid bladder problems from the Cytoxan).

Trouble, we are so glad the bad news was limited to the NSAIDS. But Agggh! Don't get me started on Science Diet. It is most definitely not the healthiest foods around, especially for dogs with cancer. Glad you looked at the ingredients. SD has so many horrible preservatives and mediocre fillers. IMHO, one of the only reasons vets are so comfortable with it is because SD spends so much money getting into vet schools as part of "nutrition" education, and then they get into vet offices later on, where they become the exclusive dealer. In fact, we almost gave Wyatt some SD treats, until we saw the ingredients. They contained ethoxyquin, a preservative also used as a rubber stabilizer and weed killer!
OK, I'm off my soapbox now.
Have you looked into Dog Gone Pain from American Bio Sciences
I called the company and they assured me there is no shellfish in it. They did say it has shark cartilige, which, as we understood it, is a generic term for shellfish parts. But DGP swears their shark cartilige is truly shark cartilige and nothing else.

A quick search reveals various sources stating that many glucosamine supplements are indeed derived from shellfiah exoskeleton, while chondroitin appears to be shark cartilage based.
I also found DGP available at the following online stores:
