Been up all night with Abbee. Her whining is non stop and she doesn't seem to want to shut her eyes, not even for 10 seconds. Is this normal or does it mean her pain meds aren't strong enough. Or maybe it means her tramadal is making her hallucinate. She is very wide eyed. Her breathing is also somewhat rapid.
Did anybody have medicine to counter act the anxiety her tramadal is bringing her, or something to help her sleep?

Shelby had that issue about day 3 post amp ... pacing, soft moans, etc. I am NOT a vet but I can tell you that my vet had me remove her Fentyl patch and reduce her tramadol. Now a lot of people here will say they need more painkillers so you really need to know your dog. My vet assured me Shelby was NOT in pain but the tramadol was making her psychotic. So I got her some Trazadone (like a doggy valium) that would counter the tramadol and help her sleep. It did, sort of , but the first couple of weeks were really, really hard.

I didn't have any rapid breathing w/Shelby but we did have anxiety and pacing and no sleep (for her OR me). I finally had to shut my bedroom door and put on some soothing music for her and pray that she would calm herself, which she did. She also can really sense my anxiety so I needed to step away from her for her to heal. I would definitely call your vet if you are concerned but remember, it's only been 24 hours ... she's probably still coming off the anesthesia, still in pain, confused, drugged. Shelby was at the vet for 2 days (my request since I couldn't stay home w/her) but every time I went for visiting hours - she was fine.

So I think your vet can probably prescribe something to ease her anxiety (shelby had to have a Trazadone in the ER too).

Good luck!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

Cody didn't sleep alot his first few days home... constantly moving and trying to get comfortable. I was up every hour. The whining is really the pain meds since she didn't stay the first night and have time to get off of them. BUT i know you made it through the night. Hopefully tonight is better for you!

I know you're tired of hearing this is "normal", but in the recovery of many dogs...yeah...this is "normal"!

My Hapy Hannah did not sleep at all the first nineteen hours...not al all!! I do not even recall her laying down...just pacing, maybe sitting some, non-stop whining, yelping...it was awful!! And I hadn't joined this site yet!! Scard out of my mind and totally exhausted!!

The hospital meds are still in her, but they should be out in another dayish. Remember, most dogs do spend at .east the first night in the hospital, so you are really "seeing it all"! Ugh!

Hang in there!! It will get better!! Hang onto us! Once I grabbed the tripawd lifeline, I nevsr let go...and that's been over a year now!!

Love and hugs!

Sally and Happy Hannah

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
