WOW, thank you so much!!! I knew I had seen it here somewhere (I thought). I am definitely going to ask Dr. Turner about those for Shelby - even though we're done w/chemo, I don't see how it could hurt! 🙂

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

So....how's she doing?  Poo all better?  Any new accidents, etc.?

Magic mushrooms!!!  They're magical!!!

~ Katy & Jackson

ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12.  Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ!  No side effects.  We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments.  He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors!  Our love. Our funny little guy!

She's doing MUCH better in that dept. No more accidents in the house (always go w/your gut - i knew my baby wasn't right since she doesn't mess in the house). The meds for the colitis fixed her up and everything seems normal in that dept again.

She's looking rather 'chunky' so I fixed her a slow cooker chicken thigh and barley thing for dinner since I want to cook (partially) for her. I gave her 1/2 her kibble and mixed w/1/2 the serving size. She ate it right up! I hope the barley, being high in fiber to make her full, doesn't make her poop WAY more (outside of course).

Thank you for asking!
Hugs,

Alison and Shelby

Alison, I'm so glad Katy shared the information about the Dog Food Dude's book!  I'm just now reading this thread for the first time and I'm glad to hear Shelby is doing much better.

I have used that book quite a bit for reference, especially portion sizes.  Libby loves the Cancer Fighting Turkey stew.  I too mix homemade with her grain free kibble.  I change it up quite a bit, rotating the veggies and proteins when I don't actually cook a recipe like the Turkey stew.  It's kind of funny...all the ingredients in the Turkey stew are human grade but when you put it all together and it cooks, it still looks like dog food and not something I want to eat, lol.

We had avocados at dinner tonight and I wasn't sure if it was a food to share with the dogs so I referenced the book and discovered it's under the cautionary shares, but a little is ok.

Keep up the good work, Shelby!

Liberty (Libby) was diagnosed with OSA on 1-22-13.  Right front amputation on 1-31-13. No IV Chemo. Metronomic Therapy started 2-19-13 along with supplements and some home cooking. Lungs clear until 1-06-14.  She's still her happy, hoppy, bossy self.  Living the dog life to the fullest and a proud Winter Warrior. :) RIP my Libby 4-21-03 to 3-19-14

I believe it's the pit that's really toxic but the rest is OK in very small amounts. I think a lot of nutrition advice says to avoid them completely to be safe, however.

I was going to make her the cancer-fighting turkey stew but figured I would try the chicken thigh one since we need to dial it down on the calories! Shelby acts like a hungry, hungry hippo ALL the time (and she's got no reason for that). I assume the barley isn't as bad as the other carbs and trying to keep her grain-free too! 🙂

But I agree - I don't even like barley or dark meat but it looks like dog food! I didn't add the tomatoes (my crock pot isn't that big)! I also forgot to add the 'oil' but Shelby didn't notice. The worst part was cutting up all the chicken since I couldn't find boneless or skinless thighs and while I eat meat, I don't like to cut raw chicken. The things we for those we love!

Shelby also got some brussel sprouts tonight when I dropped a few on the floor after roasting them (I let them cool first). Who knew? My dog loves all veggies (except kale, spinach or celery). She might like the green leafy ones if I cooked them for her.

Cheers!

We like pooping machines!  At least ones that do it outside!  Barley is a great grain.  So is oatmeal.  Both barley, oatmeal, and veggies will bulk up her poo, so that should help form things well.  But...a lot of fiber and bulk will keep her pooping like a machine!

Her updated diet sounds great!  Jackson is jealous of her brussels sprouts.... he only got green beans tonight.  He really suffers.  winker

I'll have to remember to try barley, thanks! Libby had brussel sprouts, cranberries and chicken breast with her kibble tonight.  She eats like she's in training for something!

Jerry, yes the pit is toxic.  The Dog Food Dude also says that "the greatest concern comes from Guatamalan avocados and less from California Hass avacados"  interesting!  Because of the healthy fats it can be shared but in limited amounts. :)

That is interesting about the types of Avocados being of a concern. I wonder if just bypassing that and putting avocado oil in their food would be OK? We can ask Dog Food Dude about that, he'll be on Tripawd Talk Radio in March!

Oh crap (literally) I hope the colitis isn't back. Shelby pooped (big) in the house today. She was way upset and my carpet looks like trash now with the 'white' spots from using the carpet cleaner. I really want to get my carpet shampooed but I don't know how to do that and keep her off it for the 10 hours it needs to dry.

I wonder if she's eating too many veggies. For breakfast, I have been giving her a couple baby carrots / brussell sprouts / cucumber cut-up. And then her dinner is 1/2 cup kibble and 1/2 cup the barley chicken stew that also has carrots and green beans. She gets 2 spoons of pure pumpkin a day. Too much fiber? She did two poops on our walk this a.m. so I figured she was good and then a medium poop on our evening walk - even though she'd clearly had a big poop in my house.

I hope this is just too much fiber OR chemo reactions. It wasn't diarrhea at all. Any ideas?

Sounds like a lot of fiber.  Maybe cut her back a little and see what happens.  Too much can make you go a lot

Yeah... she's 22 pounds - that is probably a lot of fiber for a little dog. She's acting fine otherwise. She was really embarrassed though.

On an unrelated note - I have also had a belly ache for 2 days so now my dog and I have the same digestive issues! FANTASTIC! laughing
