Hi friends............computer problems yet again. (Does it EVER end?)
Happy to say that after a recent scare, Shelby is doing GREAT! She is on the K9 Immunity Plus in addition to some supplements from her holistic vet. Speaking of that, Connie (holistic-vet-she-who-walks-on-water) mentioned Piroxicam for lung mets.
Any experiences? Success? Not success?
Will check back soon. Limited computer access....grrrrrrrr.
P.S. Spirit Jerry, I can't seem to post pics on the Tripawds FB page....any idea what? When I go to Group to send a photo, it doesn't recognize Tripawds
My dog Cadence has been on Piroxicam from the day she was first diagnosed with osteo. We give it to every night in her food. My vet said there has been some studies that show it stops the cancer from spreading. We are only 7 1/2 weeks post amp, and have only 2 sessions of chemo, so I couldn't say if it has helped her or not. But we really trust our vet and we continue to give it to her. She has had no side effects from the medication.

Sorry to read that it's back. I hate the C word. I hope the gloves are on tight. Go Shelby!

Hank, you better believe the gloves are on! Not today.....not without a fight.
Michelle, thanks for the insight. She's on Prednisone also. Currently 10 mg in the a.m. and 5 mg in the p.m. We had gotten it down to 5 mg at each meal, but the coughing returned. So we upped the morning. Will talk to Vet-Who-Walks-On-Water some more about Piroxicam.
Thanks again all..........xoxoxo
Glad to hear Shelby is doing good. Prayers to continue that walk.

Yay! Glad to hear that the mets are behaving.
Yes, piroxicam and other NSAIDS like Rimadyl are used in Metronomic Chemotherapy because these NSAIDs have been shown to have anti-tumor properties. I would definitely give it a try.
As for our Facebook page, it's a page, not a group. Maybe that's why you couldn't find it? You can always post the pics here, or send me a couple and I'd be happy to do it for you.
Thanks for the update, it's great to hear from you. Hoppy Howlidays to you and Shelby.

Pam, I'm sorry that you're having to fight yet another battle. It seems like too much. You've already done this with Shelby; she needs a break. I'm delighted that she's doing well right now and enjoying the things she's always loved. I hope the meds keep things at bay for a very long time.

We did piroxicam and cytoxan for Abby every day for a long while. She tolerated it quite well.
Worth a try! Glad to hear her boxing gloves are on tight!
Hang in there, Shelby

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!
Piroxicam didn't agree with my Yoda's GI very soon after trying it with him, unfortunately, but it was what Yoda's oncologist-who-walks-on-water recommended when his osteo progressed despite chemo. So, when they tolerate it, sounds like a good way to go. Just watch for the evil "tarry" stool.
Show 'em lung mets are no big deal Shelby! I believe you're going to be one of those who doesn't let mets get her down for a long long time!!!
Gerry has been a tripawd since 12/16/2009.
He was a shelter dog with a mysterious past and an irrepairable knee injury.

So sorry to hear about Shelby. I would have been confident that the cancer was gone as well. There never is enough time, so enjoy your girl to the fullest, and I can't wait to look at those pictures of her on facebook! She is such a beauty!

Shelby is definitely a fighter...a true tripawd princess warrior! You are all in my thoughts and know that there are a lot of us out there pulling for you all!

Pam,
You know how sorry I am about the return of Shelby's cancer. She is such a sweetie and I love hearing about Shelby and Phoebe and their bitey-face episodes.
I know what you mean about cancer separating the BFFs — my daughter's dog, Sosa (Smilin' Sammy's littermate), was diagnosed last week with histiocytic sarcoma. It is a very aggressive cancer and the prognosis is poor — two to three weeks without treatment and several months with chemo.
I hate this disease. Fight it with all your might, my friend. Only concede when you need to release Shelby from pain, then send her on her way to the bridge with the knowledge that you did everything you could. My thoughts and best wishes are with you. Hugs ...
Beth
Smilin' Sammy, March 16, 2004 – Dec. 5, 2011
Golden retriever, diagnosed with osteosarcoma in September 2010 — right front leg amputated November 2010. He fought valiantly to stay with us; but a second diagnosis of osteosarcoma, this time in his left front leg, was more than our golden warrior could overcome. He loved his pack — and everyone else he met.
We loved him even more.
Thanks for the pennies, Sammy. They helped.
I just love you guys.................and I am still without a working computer, so I'm at a friend's using his.
Yep, gloves are on.....today we're headed to Hip Dog Canine Hydrotherapy, Tropical Storm Shelby's favorite place in the whole world. She's a swimming/diving fool and as long as she loves it and feels up to it, we'll keep on keepin' on!

Things have taken a turn for the worse
We're going to transition Shelby off of Prednisone and start her on Piroxicam. The side effects from the Pred (i.e. panting, excessive thirst, etc.) are exhausting her. It's been a VERY quick decline and I pray that one she's off the Pred and we can start the Piroxicam, there might be improvement.
God, I hope so.
For those of you using Piroxicam, may I ask where you get your RX filled? I'm in Orlando and researching local pharmacies. Also, not ruling out online places because Doc will fill them as long as it's a US pharmaceutical. Shelby is 51 pounds, so I'm not quite sure what her dosage would be.
My computer is still down, but I can read email on my crappy little flip phone, so if you wish to respond to BHS74FlyGirl@aol.com in addition to here, that's great.....if not, I'll get on here when I can.
You'd think after going through this 17 times in the past 10 years I'd be a pro....but no matter how many times you go through it, it's still fresh and raw and painful.
