Rosco is home! Our pick-up at the vet hospital went well - he was excited to see me and my husband, and tried to jump up to greet me on his hind legs and had a little stumble, but it didn't seem to faze him.
We carried him home two blocks in his carrier bag, but let him out to pee before we went up to our apt. Once we took the cone off, he was hopping along really well and had a good pee! He still hasn't pooped, but Vet said he should be end of day tomorrow and to call if not by then. He likes to pee on the trees on the left side of our street (when walking from our apt) so usually he lifts his left leg, which he can't do now. So, he has to change his routine a bit to turn himself around to pee, but he figured it out! See the video here: https://vine.co.....5LmzTVaM2P. And, this is day 2 post amp!
Once at home he was nearly undone by the carpet pads we laid out - very foreign to him, he almost prefers the hardwood, but we will see if he gets used to it - I don't want him to slip! He was excited to have a bit more food and his pills - he's eating great. We set up an air mattress in the living room (I read about someone else on here doing that), since he really wanted to be on the couch and we don't want him trying to jump up or down onto it. He seems more comfy on the air mattress than his dog bed - I think because he can splay out - and he's been resting and snoozing. It does take him a little longer than usual to get settled to lay down - he likes to circle and get his bedding just right by adjusting it with his teeth, and he seems to be futzing a little more than ususal, but then lays down!
Asked the vet about drugs, and she said he was off the heavy duty pain killer all day and was doing great - so we thought we would see how he's doing on the Rimadyl and call if he was uncomfortable. He is getting around great and resting quietly, so we will continue to monitor him closely, but we're going with it!
A few photos - Rosco got a very sweet get well package mailed from my sister-in-law:
And, here is the surgery site:
A little redness and bruising but not much swelling. (That's his upper leg muscle you're seeing at the top)
We just got a surprise champagne delivery from one of our good friends. We've had some amazing support!
Thanks to you all for your messages and advice!
OHHH way to go ROSCO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You are looking great buddy!!! We can't wait to hear all about your progress in the days to come.

Jill is a 9-year-old tuxedo kitty. She was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in June 2012 on her toe in her right hind leg. Her leg was amputated on 12/12/12 and she completed four rounds of chemo (2 of Carbo, 2 of Doxy) in April 2013. Oh he looks so good! Look at that sparkle in his eyes!
I'm glad that he's doing so well and you talked to your vet about the meds, it's good to have a backup plan, hopefully he'll just sail right through and not even need more drugs. Good luck this weekend! Try to get some rest and just love eachother up, he made it!

Hi everyone! Emily's husband, Drew, here. Here's a video I took of Rosco hopping along outside, doing great: https://vine.co.....JeF7ZOXtQU
What Rosco? All I saw was a flash run so fast across my screen I couldn't tell what that was!
Yay!

Yay for Rosco! What a strong boy!
My little chihuahua lost her front leg to a mast cell tumor about 5 weeks ago. The first 10-12 days were really rough on the whole family. Lots of ups and downs. Remember that he did go through major surgery and not let him do too much, too fast. The roughest part of Abbee's recovery was pain management . She was on Tramadol and Gabapetin. Tram made her wide eyed and nervous, but I think Tramadol was very necessary. Dogs hide their pain so well and I thought it's better for her to be a little anxious than in any pain. My vet added Gabapetin (it affects the nerve endings in the brain). This really helped her sleep and was such a blessing in her recovery process. Feel free to ask us any questions on meds bc I think everyone will agree its one of the most overwhelming part of helping our little ones.
I'm so glad everything is going so smoothly for your little one. After the 3rd week Abbee was just about 100%. She is doing amazing now, she doesn't miss her leg at all.
It's been a slow process but it does get back to normal, I promise!
Wishing you happy day,
Samantha and Abbee
We are 1 week post-amp!
Thanks for all the advice. We are making sure Rosco gets plenty of rest - he's been pretty quiet most of the day and sleeping a lot. He does perk up for meals though! He loves his food so much he spins around when he's about to get dinner, and he's even kept that up post-amputation! Video here: vine.co/v/M1zUYUFvxag
When he goes out he is quite energetic, pushing to go farther, but we are just letting him outside to go to the bathroom, that's it. Doing his business with no problem on 3 legs, he was strong enough to squat like usual! He has been occasionally trying to lift his back leg to pee, which results in a very very short handstand and then he settles into a wide stance without lifting the leg. On the right side, he does great.
He's been sleeping well, eating well - no whimpering, pacing etc, so we have stayed with Rimadyl only.
Have been lucky to have work be flexible so that my husband and I have been home with him this week. Next week our dog walker will take him out midday, and we go back to the vet on Weds.
His incision is looking much less red and bruised -
..And, he's had some easter treaties. Don't worry, those ears only stayed on a second!
Knock on wood but so far, this recovery is going as well as it could go! I hope someone else on this forum reads about Rosco and feels better about an upcoming amputation!
Tri-pawd pride!
Rosco,
You look absolutely fantastic! Wow his recovery looks like and sounds like it's going very, very well.
There's nothing better than seeing them do what they always did before surgery. You know your on a good road for sure.
He is precious, that face (love the bunny ears!)
Keep posting those great videos and pics, he's a super cutie.

Hi Ampuversary Buddy Rosco and Emily and Drew.
Rosco looks like he's doing wonderfully...great to see him hopping around so well! It's like he's saying. "Look at me...whee!"
I'm hoping Lexie gets some of her earlier energy back. Thanks for inspiring us...I'll have to Vine her next time she's up for a good hoppy walk.
Cheers to a continued great recovery!
Deb and Angel Lexie* Diagnosed at age 13. Tried radiation first; wish we had amputated upon diagnosis (even with lung mets). Joined Club Tripawd April 2014 & Lexie loved life on 3 legs! Advice: Start physical therapy as soon as your vet clears it, especially hydrotherapy if available :-) See Lexie pics here.
Hi Deb!
Thanks so much for the nice note - I've been thinking about you and Lexie! Just clicked through to your photos and it looks like Lexie has been enjoying some time outdoors! Hope both of you are doing well - keep us posted!
Rosco update! We are 2.5 weeks post-surgery - stitches are out and Rosco is cleared to do whatever he wants, but we're working on ramping up slowly! He has been jumping up on the couch, and has been fine going down the stairs. A few stumbles going up stairs - he tries to RUN up them, so we have to hold him back a bit so he doesn't slip.
Here is is running around at Prospect Park -
His 10th birthday is next week
