A Dog Has Died
by Pablo Neruda
My dog has died.
I buried him in the garden
next to a rusted old machine.
Some day I'll join him right there,
but now he's gone with his shaggy coat,
his bad manners and his cold nose,
and I, the materialist, who never believed
in any promised heaven in the sky
for any human being,
I believe in a heaven I'll never enter.
Yes, I believe in a heaven for all dogdom
where my dog waits for my arrival
waving his fan-like tail in friendship.

Thanks to everyone for your friendship, kind words, support, questions, and answers. She went peacefully.
Dear little Boinks, we will never forget you. I remember watching your video of when you walked outside and then *BOINK*! You made me laugh and for that I thank you. Bless your parents for taking such good care of you and for doing for you what, given the information that they had, would give you the best life you could have. Your parents will miss you, but you gave them so much joy...I'm sure you helped them as much as they helped you. Bless you, little Boinks 🙂

Mel, we are sending lots of hugs to you.
Our hearts go out to you on this very, very sad day. We are so sorry.
Boink's courageous battle will always be remembered here, and her spirit will live on forever.

Bless you for your strength to do what you knew was best for Boinks, and for handling it so beautifully by passing along this poem.
It reminds me of when I posted this piece about the best place to bury a dog a couple months after we released Jerry from his broken body.
Peace.

I am so very sorry for your loss. In the short time you've been here, I've grown to love Boinks as I do all the others. She will be missed. Mel, you are in my thoughts as you face this emptyness in your life. I hope the great memories get you through this difficult time.
RIP sweet Boinks, run free at Rainbow Bridge.

Boinks touched a special place in all of our hearts. She - and her family - really stood out. She seemed so happy just to be with you, no matter what. I am so sorry for your loss, and hope your good memories help you overcome your sadness. Thank you for sharing that poem.

How quickly we all got attached to your sweet Boinks, and how much we now share your pain. The poem is beautiful. I know no words will fill the void in your life but I hope that eventually the joy she brought you will surface. I'm so sorry.

Dear Mel and family: We are so sorry for your loss. Sweet Boinks. We felt so attached to her and your story.
Your deep love and care for her is evident to all of us through the miles. We're so glad she got to return home with her family.
The Neruda poem is lovely. May Boinks run free and play with her friends! She has some special dogs to keep her company.
Love to you all, Eve, Romeo, and family
OMG! You must have been freaking out with worry when he didn't want to get up! I'm hoping that my Jake (amputation scheduled for 9/17) will not have the same problem. Actually, he has been already hopping around on 3 legs with the cancer one being fractured, while we waited for the biopsy results. So maybe he won't have the same problem after surgery? I really hope your baby gets motivated by his big friend coming to visit...
Sending lots of hugs! Keep us posted!!!
Jake, 10yr old golden retriever (fractured his front right leg on 9/1, bone biopsy revealed osteosarcoma on 9/10, amputation on 9/17) and his family Marguerite, Jacques and Wolfie, 5yr old german shepherd and the newest addition to the family, Nala, a 7mth old Bengal mix kittie. Jake lost his battle on 11/9/2009, almost 8 weeks after his surgery. We will never forget our sweet golden angel… http://jakesjou.....ipawds.com ….. CANCER SUCKS!
Oh no! I am soooo sorry! I posted my reply to your first post, thinking that was your most recent one. Only afterwards I saw the one from you saying that Boinks had passed away. I am so sorry for your loss!!! I was told my several of my vet friends, that there was always a possiblity that they wouldn't recover from the surgery... But it was a chance you took (a chance that I will take), to try and give your baby some more quality time... Please try not to feel too bad. You did everything a loving mom and dad could do for their sweetie... My heart goes out to you and your family...

Thanks again to everyone for sharing the burden of our loss. It does help.
Jakesmom, I still feel the amputation was the only choice that offered a chance for a cure or just more quality time. It didn't work out the way we had hoped, and I think probably even those who have a relatively quick recovery still go through hell. But we get through it, even if it gets really bad. If you are worried that Jake might have the same problem as Boinka with not being able to get up, think about how you would handle such a situation if it were to happen. There's harnesses, and we used moving blankets to slide her around when it was clear she couldn't or wouldn't move on her own.
We were prepared to start her on professional rehab before she got really sick. I massaged her remaining legs and her back and neck often, and I started some range of motion exercises with her back legs.
The post-op time wasn't all bad. We had a lot of happy moments those last two weeks, even as we struggled with what was happening. Here's my last video of Boinks before she got real sick. I think she's being a sassy girl and telling me to hush now.
It's so good to have your perspective here, thank you so much.
We can't tell you how much it hurts whenever a beloved pup doesn't make it through amputation recovery. While it doesn't happen often, when it does, it's so heartbreaking.
Bless you for being such a good pawrent to Boinks and your willingness to do what you could to help her. She is most definitely proud of you for being a wonderful example of the goodness of humans toward their furry kids.
Many hugs...
