Hey all, my new friend Sumi wanted me to post this for him. Please check out his questions, and any advice is very appreciated! Thanks guys.
-Jerry

My dog, Sumi, had his back left leg amputated (half femur with a muscle wrap) a month ago. He's doing pretty well, making it up and down stairs, even doing a front paw-stand so he can keep peeing and lifting that back right leg (very macho). He loves being outside during the day and spends a lot of time laying on his left side on our concrete patio (which is cool and shady).

I noticed that he was getting a bald spot on his stump but thought it would callous up like the
little patches on his elbows. Now though, I see that it is open and weeping and appears to have a tiny hole in it that is getting a little pus in it, and I don't want an infection to get worse or turn septic...we will call the vet tomorrow to check in with him.

But I am wondering, how have other tripod owners dealt with A) the sores themselves, and B) balancing the dog's love of an activity (whether it's laying outside, playing frisbee, or running full tilt) with the realities of life with three legs that make that activity either inadvisable or less frequent than dog would like?

Thanks,

Katherine and Sumi

Hi Jerry,

thanks for posting this for us. Hopefully we'll get some good ideas for keeping the stump comfy and healthy!

Hey Sumi, my Dad usually cleaned my wound with either sterile water or witch hazel. He has this wondeful attribute that he loves to take care of wounds and scars.  It all started when my Mom had her cancer and had to had surgery, he took care of her wounds and bandages..then when I had my surgery he was the one in charge of keeping my wounds clean.  He said to check out the first aid area like at WalMart and look for some spray that is like a wound wash.  Hope this helps and good luck at the vet.

Thanks! We have been rinsing it with saline the last few days, and it seems to be healing on its own. For now, we are keeping Sumi off the concrete. Maybe he just can't lay outside for hours on the patio unless we make him a hammock or something!

Thanks,
Katherine
