My dog Vadar was dignosed with cancer back in February 2016.  The turmor is located in the mouth area.  He has been doing well to this point except for an ocassional infection, and of course the tumor bleeding since it is located in the mouth.  He has no teeth except for four (4) canine teeth.  October 22nd the vet deceided to put him on Predinsolone which I had no problem with if it would make him feel a little better for two (2) weeks he took 1/2 tablet twice a day for 2 weeks then it was backed down to 1/2 tablet once a day.  Since last Tuesday December 6th he was fine then that night he started to what I will say sounds like snoring loudly.  This does not happen every night or even all day long, but it does happen often enough that I am wondering if he should be on the predinsolone or another steriod type medication in hopes that this will stop.  I am also wondering if he is suffering and not getting enough oxygen.  He is eating, going to the bathroom as usual.  Need some advice please.

Hello Vadar and family. Not having any experience with prednisolone for anything but bone cancer, (I'm assuming Vadar has a mouth cancer?), I can't offer any insight. However, these are symptoms that your vet needs to know about so you can discuss and fine tune Vadar's medication. Also, if you haven't consulted with an oncologist, it's highly recommended you do. That way, even if you opt out of chemo, you can have all of the information needed to know what to expect with his condition.

We hope Vadar has many more months of quality time with his pack. He's lucky to have a parent who's so in tune with him.

Hi Vadar & family 💖🐶

Nevertheless, I am sending you and your boy as much pawsitive energy as I can master and am so glad Vadar has a loving and caring family such as your lovely self 💞

Please do let us know how Vadar is progressing 💕

Sending you a big hug and cuddles to your boy 💞💞🐾🐶

Yeah, don't have much advice regarding the Pred. I know, even though it has side effects, there are certainly times it can do a lot of good. Sounds like it's been very effective for Vadar and that's good to hear!

Maybe you could record the "snore sounds" and have your vet losten to that so he can better guide you.

Dopes it wake him up at night? When it happens during the daynis he being really active when it happens or just "lazing around"? Does it seem to bother him, make him uncomfortable, any other noticeable signs that he's not getting enough oxygen like pale gums, etc? Is it possible the tumor has abscessed and maybe some "fluid" is kind of making him make a "gurgle" or "gag" sound? Just throwing a bunch of stuff out there!

I know I asked more questions than answers, but hopefully your Vet can use some of these "clues" to put Vadar on a good treatment plan.

Update us when you can. Cheering for Vadar!!

Hugs!

Thank you everyone for your support and kind words.  Vadar is doing alright today.  Yesterday was a different story.  I thought for sure it was the end, but I just loved on him during the evening and this morning seemed to be doing better.  Haven't given him Predinsolone since Sunday, but that is only because I ran out.  But after reading a little bit about it and the use of it and the side effects I am not sure I want him to go back on it.  Again there are several other issues that I am watching closely and I hope that he makes it through Christmas and New Years, but I am not getting my hopes up because it could be tomorrow for all I know.  Again I want to thank you all for your support.

Please talk to your vet ASAP about stopping predinsolone!  Tri-pug Maggie was on it for 6 months as part of her chemo for mast cell cancer and we had to taper off of it for a month.

Maggie lost her leg to mast cell but later developed oral melanoma.  Because of other issues I was not able to aggressively treat that cancer.  Is Vader on pain meds for his tumor?

I know how hard it is when you are going day to day. I hope Vader has many, many more days with you.

Tri-pug Maggie survived a 4.5 year mast cell cancer battle only to be lost to oral melanoma.
