Hi, our lovely Golden Retriever, Daisy-May, just had a rear leg amputation on November 13th and is recovering incredibly well. We have her staying in the safety of a 5x5 cozy pen in our living rom to keep her near us but separated from our other Golden. Since coming home, she has bared her teeth and growled if he goes near her area in any way. One time coming in from a potty break they accidentally crossed paths (we have made sure this doesn't happen again) and she lunged at him and snapped, he wasn't hurt and he quickly backed off. She has relaxed about him passing by her pen but absolutely cannot cope if they do not have a fence or gate between them. She has always been the more confident of our two dogs but never aggressive. I am hoping this is just because she is aware she is vulnerable right now and trying to keep herself safe but am worried about post recovery and if they will ever be able to be around each other again. We would of course not attempt to reintroduce them until she is much farther along in her healing process, but when it is time, advice on the best way to do this would really help. They have never been 'bonded' so to speak but always 'cohabited' well. Has anyone else dealt with this in a multi pet home?
Hi Cheryl, welcome! Your future posts won't need to wait for approval so post away.
So usually when unusual aggression is taking place, it's often pain related. What kind of medication was she on after she came home? Is she on any now? Does she show any pain signals when she is out on a potty break, outside of the pen?
I wouldn't panic yet abut the two of them not being able to get together again. Of course they will! Recovery is temporary and full of ups and downs. You guys will get through this.
I'm glad she is doing well otherwise!
Hello Daisy May and family! Curious, what was the reason for her amputation?
Ask Jerry mentioned, this may be result of still having some pain from the amputation. What kind of meds is she on right now, the docent frequency and how much does she weigh?
The only other thing I might offer is that she is probably feeling quite vulnerable. With animals in the wild after they have had a "wound", they tend to hide and they do not let other animals near them. from the amputation.
Let us know how things are going. Is Jerry mentioned, this will eventually resolve itself. We've seen this type of thing before.
Hugs
