Lexie is 4 days post op (front leg amp) and isn't dealing well with my cold pack attempts. Looks like the Bella hot/cold packs that some others have recommended aren't available. Two questions:

1. Poll: How often did you ice / cold pack your tripawd post op? And was it front or rear amp?

2. How many days did you continue cold pack post op?

3. Anyone have advice for cold pack haters to get them to tolerate it?

I'm toying with the idea of digging out a Christmas stocking and putting the cold packs inside it...maybe it wouldn't feel quite as cold and she'd tolerate it a little better? On the flip side, it might not be as effective if it's not as cold.

Any thoughts/ideas welcome. Thanks!

(Key words for search/tagging: post op cold packs, post op icing, how often to use cold packs, solutions for cold packs, tripawd hates cold pack, dog won't tolerate cold pack, cold pack after surgery, icing after surgery, cold pack after amputation, cold pack poll)

Gosh, good questions.....I can't realky remember the specifics for Happy Hannah.

I did use pakages of frozen peas, frozen corn and I didput s dry thin towel between the skin and the "veggie pack". Hapy Hannah had a whole lot of brusing and swelling due to a seroma fluid "poich", so that's what I used it for. In Hapoy Hannah's world the frozen bags of peas were FOOD being "absorbed" into her skin so she didn't mind! But I do think thrpe towel inbetween is the key.

I didn't do it more than a couple of times a day as I didn't realy see any results and I guess I was looking for "instant gratification"

Now, this is just me...but if she's not overly swollen and not developing a huge hanging seroma fluid pouch, I'm not sure I'd even bother if he hates it so.

You'll still have a little bumpy ride ahead of you for a bit, bt she REALY sounds like she's feeling remarkably well mighty early on!!

YAAAAAAY LEXIE!!! We are all pulling for you sweet girl!!

Oh! Happy Hannah said to try a bag of frozen M&M's.....she thinks Lexie will like that much better!clap

LOVE!

Sally and Happy Hannah

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Hi Deb

I never used cold packs with Tuck.....but I'm sure he would not have been happy with them either.

So...I'm not much good on the advice front but I just wanted to say.....glad things are going so well with Lexie and you.

Hugs,

Linda and Tucker

This is such a good topic, I need to write about it in the blogs, thanks for asking this important question. I just transcribed this very conversation we had on our most recent Tripawd Talk Radio podcast, Veterinary Rehab Benefits for Three Legged Dogs, with Lisa Saez, PT, CCRT from Dalias Doggie Rehab, who tells us:

People are always very confused about this. Some people get stuck in the idea that you should ice the first 48 hours and then heat the area afterwards and that can be appropriate but it's not the only answer.

I generally tell people that heat is best if something is tight, it's sore, and ice is best if something is inflamed or swollen. But one things most people don't think of is ice is fabulous for muscle spasms. It will shut off or decrease the blood flow to that muscle and it actually helps to break up the spasm better. Whereas if you use heat on that sometimes it feels better intially but then the pain comes right back because you're sending blood to a spasming muscle.

How long to leave it on?

Generally for around 12-15 minutes is enough. Some dogs that tolerate either well, some dogs that tolerate one or the other. ...Many times there still is a gray area. I usually tell people that if one doesn't work, try the other. Unless something is severely inflamed and you don't want to use heat on it, in most instances there's not a problem of trying one or the other. I give a guideline of which to try first but it one doesn't work, try the other. There is a lot of individuality between dogs or even humans on which works better for each person or dogs.
