Welcome to Tripawds, your future posts will not have to wait for approval.

I'm sorry Benson is dealing with melanoma and having surgery. Will he be staying overnight at the vet?

You can read through The Required Reading list for answers to common questions about amputation, recovery and treatment. Or download one or more of the eBooks available here.

I would also recomend you look at some post-op pictures so you have an idea of what Benson will look like when you pick him up.Go to the Gallery and scroll down to surgery pictures. It is startling, especially in a front amp. Just remember to focus on Benson's eyes- he is the same pup and he needs you to be strong for him!

You will get more suggestions as other members stop by.

Hey Benson! Schnauzers are so cute...AND tough! And being tough helps alot on this journey!

I know thi jas been jard getting to this point, vut I also know, once recovery takes place, you will be so glad you did this FOR Benson!

I guess for now, the best advice I can offer is stay connected to us here, especially during recovery! Every dog is different, every recovery is different. There is a boatload of first hand experience here and we've pretty much been through.

Go through the links Karen gave you for a lot of insight.

You'll want to jave non skip scatter rugs for traction if you jave hardwood floors. Benson needs rest and only going out for potty breaks. Eating and drinking maybe off for a few days. Pooping is sometimes delayed too.

Some dogs master the art of walking as a tripawd instantly...some take a vit longer. I tried using a towel sling to help my Happy Hannah...she jist froze! So you'll just jave to see how Benson does.

Keep the pain meds consistent. Don't let the pai get ahead start. Most dogs come home with Tramadol, Gabapentin, Rimadyl and an antibiotic. He maybe restless and crying. He may not sleep much. Then again...every dog is different!!

When I picked my Happy Hannah up I didn't even look at her incision. I just told her what a good girl she was and loved on her like crazy!! Recovery was no picnic. Once she got past that though, her sparkle came back bigger and brighter than ever!!!

We are here for you! Update when you can!

Hugs to all!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle too

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Hi Guys! Sorry we missed you in the chat late last night. If you stop by earlier, say around 6pm Eastern, you'll often find folks in there. I'm also in there most mornings around 10 pacific time.

I'm sorry Benson is losing his leg but I'm gonna bet he'll bounce back quickly. As Sally mentioned, we've seen it firsthand here: Schnauzers are tough dawgs!

Let us know how surgery day went, we'll be waiting for updates. Meanwhile, the best advice I can add here is to keep your own spirits high and your attitude optimistic. So much of a pet's recovery is about our reactions to the experience. If we project a strong, upbeat attitude, they will reflect it. If we are sad and depressed....well, they follow along. So be as tough as Benson and you'll get through this easy peasy!

Keep us posted.

Looks like everyone pretty much covered everything so I'm just going to say Welcome and sorry you have to be here.  Lean on this whole community for support there's a wealth of knowledge here.  Not to mention a whole lot of Angels in people disguise.  It's a hard journey but if you can stay positive and weather any bumps in the road with pawsitivity it'll make this journey much easier.  Stay connected and we'll get you through it.  In no time at all there will be much to celebrate as your pup shows you how tough he can be!
