Hi! For the last 2 months I’ve been fostering a tripawd. He had two amputations, the most recent one 3 weeks ago. He recovered fine but it seems like he has episodes of pain (arched back, hopping on back legs, walking slowly, whining, etc.) When I take him to the vet, all they do is take his blood to test for infection, and put him back on antibiotics. Looking online, I found out that he may be having phantom pains. What would you recommend I do to help him? Thank you 🙏
Hi Lana and pup, welcome. Your future posts won't need approval so post away.
So does this dog have two legs now? Or did he have a partial amputation and then a complete one on the same limb? Just curious. We love bi-pawds too! What is is breed type and age?
Everything you describe are common pain signals of chronic, unaddressed pain. It may or may not be phantom pain (which usually looks like sudden, sharp, episodes that catch you by surprise every now and then). But it does sound like he is hurting.
Why is your vet putting him back on antibiotics? What is their diagnosis and reason for doing so? If you are not getting clear answers and he is not making progress at this point, it's time for another opinion with a vet practice that is more experienced in pain management for amputee dogs. If you would like us to help you find a practice, DM me your location and I'll look around for you. Here's what pain expert Dr. Downing has to say about vets who don't understand pain management :
