I just a question. My dog lost her leg when she was 3 or 4 months old ( rescue pup, leg was badly damaged) shes almost 5 now, and I'm just wondering if because she lost her leg so young would she still have phantom pains, or would they be bad? She does still move her nubby, and occasionally will try to scratch with it, but she has never seemed bothered by it that I have noticed. Thanks!

Hi Icy and family, welcome! Your future posts won't need approval so post away.

When your dogs moves her stump, does she cry out at all? Or seem anxious when it happens? Those are two common signs of phantom leg pain . My guess is that what you are describing is totally normal amputee behavior. The nerves still "think" there is a leg attached and so Icy will try to use the leg by moving it, or to scratch. As long as she isn't showing anxiety or other pain signals , it's probably pretty normal behavior that will likely continue the rest of her life but not cause pain.

Our Wyatt Ray had those little twitchy movements all 12 years he was on 3:

Oh whew! That's really great to hear. Well keep us posted on how she's doing! And consider taking her to rehab and taking advantage of the Tripawds Rehab Reimbursement Fund. As a young amputee, it's important to start her life knowing how to keep her strong and injury free. If you get her assessed by a canine rehabilitation therapist, the Tripawds Foundation can pay for your first rehab visit !
