Pearl joined the tripawd family yesterday and she is doing great! Was restless when I picked her up from the vet, but as soon as we got her in her kennel she did not want to move. She was still really doped up from the surgery. I had to have my best friend help me move her kennel with her in it from my truck to the garage floor where I let her rest for 4 hours or more until my boyfriend Erik got home and he helped me help her up to go outside because I knew she had to pee. The vet let me know she had not done so yet. She did pee with a little assistance from me, than I got her kennel set up in the living room. I finally got her to eat 2 pieces of bread with peanut butter on it, and after that 1 cup of boiled ground turkey and rice with about a teaspoon of chicken broth, and meds of course. She still did not want to drink plain water and I remembered I had read on here somewhere to try putting a little chicken broth in the water and that worked YAY! I am so happy that I found this site it has helped me a lot.
It was a lot easier to get her up and outside this morning for her 2nd pee. I got her back in her kennel and started getting food ready and when she heard me stirring Bears (my other GSD) food she got up on her own which made me super nervous, so I ran over to help make sure she did not fall and get her comfy on a dog bed over by me in the dinning room. She ate another cup of turkey & rice with fish oil & half scoop of nupro. Took her outside again and she had her first poo YAY! Of course with just a little assistance to make sure she does not fall. She was pretty much holding herself up though. She than ate another cup of turkey, & rice with half scoop of nupro and drank plain water.
Hooray for Pearl! She's a rock star and I can tell this is going to be a fantastic recovery. Just try to keep her calm and from overdoing things (hard to do with a GSD I know!), but that will help her heal a lot faster.
The fact that she pooped and peed is awesome. Hopefully the rest of the recovery will go just as well. There may be a few bumps in the road but you can get through them, she'll do great. Keep us posted OK?

Hi, ..really good news about your (very new) tripawd Pearl...
Our 4 1/2 month old GSD Serge, is on his 3rd day, and we have him on Acepromazine, as well as his meds, because he was tearing around as if nothing had happened, and banging into everything and everyone. He finds it awkward to poop, because he is missing his left rear, and sits down a couple of times, before he figures it out. Like you, we have an another (older) GSD, who is at the breeder for a week, to give the little guy some rest.
You know how finicky a GSD can be at the best of times regarding food, and it must be so encouraging for you, that she is eating, drinking, pooping and peeing. This is an amazing place for advice, support, and encouragement. Look forward to comparing recovery notes with you and Pearl..
Best wishes to Pearl for a speedy recovery !!

Yea GSDs are full of energy, she has been pretty calm though. I have been keeping her in her kennel as the vet instructed for the first 2 or 3 days, unless I am taking her outside. I am probably going to be taking Bear to grandmas house in a couple of days so she can adjust without him butting in, or possibly trying to play to soon and knocking her over. So far I have been putting him in the garage whenever she comes out. He is still very puppyish and a little clumsy sometimes so I have been playing it safe.
Will try to keep updating as things go. Thank you for the support!
P.S. I also have a few pics of the amputation area, but I was not sure where I should post them on here?
Peeing, popping, eating AND drinking! Go Pearl!!!
You can post the pictures in this thread if you want to, then Jerry can steal, I mean borrow them for the gallery!
Here is how you post pictures in the forums: http://tripawds.....-photos-1/

I am a little concerned about this swelling, but when I talked to the vet yesterday explaining this she said it was fine and that it would probably get worse. Pearl has a re check appointment on Tuesday. Anyone know if this is ok?
Thank u in advance!, Mina & Pearl
As scary as this looks, yeah it's pretty normal, especially with light/white dogs. Keep an eye on it, look for signs of infection and if nothing seems unusual I'm sure it's fine. I know Tuesday can't come soon enough though!
Would you mind if I posed a pic in our Gallery's "Procedure" section?

Jerry, I will definitely be keeping an eye on it, and I do not mind at all that is part of the reason I posted them on here. I figured they might be helpful for others. Thank you for asking first though.
Linda and Tucker thank you and hugs back. Pearl is certainly doing very well so far. She is pretty restless today, and trying to be up and about quite a bit. Which is great, but I am limiting her so she does not overdo it.
Awesome, thanks, I'll put them in the gallery. I hope today is good for you and Pearl. Keep us posted.
