The Dr. is out for the weekend and It has been a week and a half since sadie lost here spair. He gave us a weeks worth of the doggie ibueprofen and she was doing really good...until the end of day 2 with out it. The inflamation flaired up and the wimpering began, He gave me another weeks worth and said he'd look at it after that. She's 20 pounds now and is on 25mg rimadahl (sp, i know)...but she seems to be having a bit more pain than before we took her off it, the swelling is down again but towards evening (we give it to her in the morning) she starts looking like she's in pain/uncomfortable....can we add a coated baby asprin to the mix or should we split the pain pill in two and give it to her twice a day?
She's still pretty lethargic, and looked absolutely pathetic when she tried itching her ear with the paw that wasn't there ...when does the crazy beagle energy come back?
Don't give aspirin as we have heard it it is a blood thinner and can cause complications with healing. Was Sadie really prescribed "doggie ibueprofen" or is it another NSAID? No Tramadol or other pain killer?
We would recommend upping her pain meds, or splitting the pill as you suggest, before adding anything to the mix that wasn't prescribed. But please keep in mind we are not vets. If you need another professional opinion, try asking Pam in the Ask A Vet forum.
FYI: We moved your topic out of the Tech Support forum where you first posted so more members will see your post here.

I would be careful about adding anything in addition to the Rymadyl without your vets OK. It could be OK, I dont know. Maybe Dr Pam will see this post. Was Rymadal the only med you were sent home with? Any Tramadol? As far as splitting the Rymadal, I do believe it is time released so you wouldnt gain anything by splitting it in two.
I used moist heat on Daisy incision and it seemed to make her more comfortable post amp. Most Phamacies like Rite Aid and Wlgreens will carry Moist Heat heating pads.
Itchy ears?? Thats what your people are there for
Daisy earned her wings on Oct 22, 2011 at 14 years old
She is now the official greeter at the rainbow bridge

This is just my personal experience, so take it for what it is worth. Many years ago my little dog Ruby started having some pain issues and her vet was going to be out of the office so his staff said to use a low dose asprin on Ruby. We ended up not being able to wait until he returned and took Ruby to another vet, she hospitalized Ruby fearing she was bleeding internally from using the asprin. She really scared us telling us how we could have really made things bad for Ruby. Now after our experience with Ruby I won't give my dog asprin.

I would be very hesitant to give extras without the pro advice. I know Bud is on Previcox and they were very specific that some extras could cause serious problems. Our vet is closed on the wkend but there is always the answering service that can put us intouch with a vet that is on call. Any chance, you have an on call vet you could put a phone call in too? Better safe than sorry Maybe some ice would help with the swelling and pain?
Ok, no aspirin...I'm gonna try the splitting of the dose tomorrow. All she is on is Rymadyl, nothing else. She was doing really good until the two days she was off it. Sorry, no after hours number here....we are as country as you get. Normally you just stop by his house or call him at home but he's not in town. I'll do the cold compress (frozen field corn bag that doesn't get too cold) and see if that reduces the inflammation. Thanks for all the tips, this crazy dog should be up and going soon. We are planning her seeing the vet as soon as he gets back in town
Thanks again, this has been just one crazy thing after another. All the other adoptive families we talk to say it happens all the time. Sadie is the official tracking dog for the boys we are adopting. Both have Down syndrome and we have been warned that they will probably be "runners" which just means they bolt when they feel like it 🙂 , be it the middle of the night or in a parking lot. Problem is, we are surrounded by hundreds of acres of wilderness...but we got our tracking dog on the mend just in time! Stop by the adoption blog if you get a chance! http://www.adop.....ogspot.com (we have a heart for the unwanted, the country these boys are in...their "difference" is seen as a curse to the family and they are cast aside....just like sadie was and our crazy tiny headed dog...but she is a whole different story).
Monkeybutt to the rescue! (cuz mommy is too lazy to switch ID's on her own account!)
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! to aspirin or any human anti-inflammatories (ibuprofen, motrin, advil, tylenol or aleve)! Not even baby coated unless your vet prescribes it. AND NEVER EVER MIX Rimadyl or any NSAIDS with anything unless your vet tells you to! As they all can have potential fatal side effects!
For pain or inflammation, always let your vet tell you what to take.
In addition to the ice packs, lots and lots of rest will help too! It's super duper major surgery and the body needs rest to heal.
Good luck and best wishes for a speedy recovery! Bless you for adopting angels. (human and canine) !
Weighing in on pain meds here, agree don't add other anti inflammatory or aspirin. what about some strictly pain meds like Tramadol or Gabapentin. I had my shepherd on both of these for 3 weeks before surgery. They made her a little placid but seemed to do a good job at controlling pain. another one called Amantadine also used. Good luck.
