Q. I have heard that garlic is not safe to give to pets. Is this true or is it a myth?
A. The ingredient in garlic that can be harmful is the allicin. Too much of it can lead to a type of anemia. Air-dried garlic contains the least amount of allicin. Raw garlic has a high amount of allicin, so is raw garlic that can cause problems if used in excess.
garlic has been highly recommended by the American Feed Control Officials, Inc (AFCO) and has been given a GRAS (generally recognized as safe) listing. Air-dried garlic contains only 397 ug/gram post allicin compounds compared to 3,192 ug/grams in raw garlic, and the allicin content is even higher in freeze dried garlic. According to the National Institute of Cancer, these post-allicin compounds are actually the most beneficial and desirable. They produce strong garlic odor in Air Dried Garlic which is responsible for its repellent properties.
You're absolutely right Gina. A while back we talked about this and TazzieDog (aka Pam the Vet) said garlic in small amounts is fine for most dogs. I've been looking for that thread but can't find it.
We have always put garlic in Jerry's food, and now Wyatt's. Not a problem at all and i think it does help repel fleas.

Gwen, I think you are right. I just remember it had blueberries. It was rank.
Okay, just hand me over the worst pawrent award! I don't think I'd give up donuts under any circumstances- it's a party when we bring home fresh baked donuts on Saturday night! Comet doesn't even leave the kitchen and guards the box until bedtime. Plus, she gets up early on Sunday and goes right to the box!
I guess I go back to the time when my 12 year old chow, Snooker was put on a RX diet a week before she had her cruciate ligament repair surgery and I felt so bad that she seemed hungry, so the night before surgery I snuck her a hot dog! It was the last thing she ate since she died. I am so happy she got to have something she loved to eat as her last meal.
Yeah, yeah, I talk a good game - we all know I'd be a nutso if I had to deal with a life threatening illness!
Comet - 1999 to 2011
She departed us unexpectedly  January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
