Luckysmom,i want to just say thank you for sharing this story during your sweet boys difficult time! My guy Duke is scheduled for surgery Monday for the same disease, and I will say, reading your journey has helped give my husband and I more hope about us making this tough decision, and confronting this life changing event head-on! I’m so glad he seems to be getting back to his old self, and that is all I wish for when it come to my buddy Duke.
Prayers to you all, and thanks again for sharing!

Hi Alissa and Duke,
Thank you for your kind words, I really appreciate it. I know how scary this is, and how overwhelming all of it feels. The night before Lucky's surgery, I hardly slept at all and I couldn't help but cry for him and for us. His very favorite thing in the world is chasing tennis balls, and I couldn't imagine him ever being able to do that again. Now, 9 days post surgery, I really feel like he will. He may not run as fast or as far, but that's ok. He even brought me a tennis ball yesterday. The day of his surgery, I tried to keep busy at work. His surgery was one of the first of the day, and so the vet called me before noon to tell me that the surgery had gone well and that he was recovering. That night, we drove the hour to the vet and were amazed at how well he was doing just a few hours after surgery. Dogs are amazing with strong spirits!!! Duke will surprise you at how quickly he will adjust! I will absolutely keep you all in my thoughts and prayers. Please let me know if there is anything that I can do for you.

YAAAAAY FOR LUCKY PLAYING WITH HIS TENNIS. BALL!! This a HUGE victory and a for sure sign his sparkle is coming back!!
See Alissa, slooooowly but surely sparkle happens. Duke is recovering at his own pace and will show you his "old self" little bit by little bit. And then BAM! Just like Lucky, you'll see an old habit return and all second guessing has gone out the window!!!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
What a relief that Lucky is doing better! That's wonderful!
It's hard not to worry. But try to remember that the only way cancer can ever "win" is when we allow it to steal precious time from our furbabies and fill it up with worry that doesn't prevent or solve anything. So do your best to push that worry aside. Get educated about what to expect, jot down as many questions for the oncologist you can think of, and focus on how well Lucky is doing now. This is a HUGE victory!

Thanks Sally! We had some absolutely beautiful weather for December in Pennsylvania so he got to be outside in the yard for 20 minutes or so. He loved it! Have a great weekend!

That is a really important point to remember Jerry! I am going to do my best to be "more dog" and to live in the moment. Thanks so much! Have a good weekend!

Good thinking! We have a whole new book all about Being More Dog, and the video podcast that inspired the title.

Hi everyone,
I just wanted to update you all on Lucky's progress. He got his stitches out today! We celebrated with cheeseburgers from McDonalds. The vet said that everything looked good. I did notice that an area along the incision is a bit red and slightly swollen, so we will keep an eye on it. I'm thinking that its just from the stitches being removed. He really didn't want to go to the vet today, he jumped right back into the car once he realized where we were. Poor guy! He is doing so well with walking, and I am hoping that he will soon be able to go up the stairs to our bedroom. He climbed the stairs outside up to our house with no issue at all, but he seems spooked about the stairs in the house. I will continue to give him the time that he needs. Thank you again for all the support. This group is awesome!

That’s great news Pam! Lucky seems to be doing great and he will probably be going up the stairs sooner than you think. It’s incredible how quickly they can adapt. Maya is 2 1/2 weeks post surgery and every day she surprises me in how quickly she is adapting to her new Tripawd life. I will keep you guys in my prayers and hoping that our fur puppies can enjoy a pain free life and beat the odds with this horrible disease.
Thanks for the great update! Time to focus on some rehab and rebuilding strength to keep Lucky strong and prevent injury from jumping around like that. For more information about a free evaluation from a CCRT or CCRP , check out the Maggie Moo Fund for Tripawd Rehab.

Stitch removal day is a great time to celebrate with a cheeseburger! Good job Lucky!
Had to chuckle at the visual of Lucky happily getting out of the car, then realized he was at Vet and jumped back In!😂
Are your steps to upstairs carpeted? Are they a steeper tread than outside, or not as wide ? He'll figure it out. Most dogs take a lot ,longer than two weeks to manage stairs. Good for him for be cautious. A very smart boy😎

Hi Pam and Lucky,
First of all I Love Labs. Black, Yellow, and Choc. Since Brownies amputation he is the same way at the vet. When he gets out of the car he trys to go the other way and he will hop away fro his doctor. Brownie has never been sick before the cancer so he is liking all this poking, xrays and etc.
Brownie was just at 12 when he had amputation on his front leg, so I know Lucky is going to do great! I believe you said he is 5?
Sending good thoughts for a speedy recovery! He will surprise you on how fast he is going to run to fetch that tennis ball!
My Beautiful Beloved Brownie was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma on February 26, 2019. With all odds against him he lived an additional one year and eight days with amputation, love, and prayer. I was honored to be his mom, and I have never been so proud! He will live forever in my Heart!

Hi Sally,
Yeah, he was not at all interested in the vet! He was extremely happy to get out of there as soon as his stitches were removed.
Our stairs are carpeted, but maybe a little more narrow than the ones outside. We just moved into our new house at the beginning of December, so he really hasn't gone up them except for the very first time we were in the house. I think it really is just psychological, so I hope that he will try them when he's ready. There is no rush!
Happy New Year!

We are definitely going to check out some rehab services!
Hi everyone. I just wanted to update you all on Lucky's progress. He is 20 days post amputation and is doing great! Yesterday was an important day for us. He had his 1st chemo session, which went really well. It didn't even phase him. The best part of the day was when he decided to walk up the stairs so he could sleep beside me!!! My husband and I have been taking turns sleeping downstairs with him. Last night was my turn to sleep upstairs. I woke up a little after midnight and there he was sleeping on the floor beside me! I was still worried about him walking back down, but he didn't even hesitate. I can't explain just how happy that made me!
Hope everyone is having a good week!
Pam
Go lucky!!!!🎉🎉🎉
im glad to hear that chemo went well. And OMD stairs all on his own! Dogs are amazing. When they put there mind to something theres no stopping them. Even when it gives mom a heart attack 😉
Thank you for the smile. Reading this pupdate brought back some good memorys and it makes my day to see lucky doing so well.

My sweet soulmate Roane was diagnosed with osteo in June of 2019. Had a rear leg amp on July 2nd & crossed the rainbow bridge to be with her sister Gypsy on the first day of Autumn Sept 23 2019.
