Hi Olive and furmily
i am just catching up on your thread here and am hoping that Olive is recovering as she should be... lots of rest, lots of fluids, rest, potty break, rest, fluids, rest... you however may not be getting any rest...! Hoping all is well.
Flemingo. Good luck with your Chesapeakes surgery on Monday.
I can absolutely say that although the first couple of weeks of recovery was super tough, Stewie is now 6 months post amputation and we have no regrets! We had no idea how much pain he was in prior to his surgery, until he showed us how much hoppier he is on 3!
All the best from Petra, Stewie🐾 and his Pride >^,,^<
Hi all. Thanks so much for the continued support. My Olive girl is such a champ. She is flying through her recovery like it is nothing. I don't think she is really missing that leg at all. So far her recovery antics have included getting on the couch, using the front paw she has left to pry my son out of the way so she could snuggle next to me on the couch. She has even made her way up the stairs and back down again, but that is one we are going to try to keep from repeating again until she has had more time to recover.
Yesterday we went to the vet for a bandage change and post op check up. It was the first time I've seen her surgical area. It was actually not as bad as I was expecting. She got all good marks from the vet.
I really think I am incredibly lucky to have had such an easy time with her recovery period. We also lucked out with the timing. We have had three snow days in a row to stay home with her during her recovery.
Flemingo if there is anything I can try to help you with with your upcoming surgery I would be glad to try to help. It's a rollercoaster ride of emotions, but everyone here is so supportive. There is lots of great information on the site as well. I wish you all the best for you upcoming surgery on your furbaby.

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
I see Olive, like Otis, had no desire to wait to celebrate couch day
She sounds like she is doing great and it sounds like your family is doing great. This is such a wonderful update! Good girl Olive! These southern snow storms allowed me to be home with Otis too, and I was also thankful!

Well done Olive girl!
I’m starting to think that these puppies are absolutely aware about their leg going ‘missing!, they’re just so bloody grateful for the pain to be gone they have never been hoppier!

Good job on early couch day! Hehehehe, I know it’s terrible isn’t it?! Stewie did the same thing the little buggar! I almost had a heart attack when he decided that it was time to go downstairs!!! It wasn’t time yet!!! They know what they want right?!

I felt the same way... I don’t know what I was expecting, but I was surprised that such a major surgery could look so neat and tidy!

You are fortunate to have had no major issues for sure! Excellent girl Olive! Yay for snow days!!!
Keep rockin it and have a super hoppy day!

Hi, Sarah!
Olive is still continuing to do amazing post surgery. Our big battle right now is trying to keep her from doing to much. She's been up and down the stairs twice today. My first attempt at blocking hey from the stairs failed and she found a way to bully herself around it. The second time we were supposed to lock her in her crate and didn't.
Olive has always been an incredibly strong dog and has what I can only guess is an extremely high pain tolerance. I've never heard her Yelp or cry out in pain. The worst I've seen her do is wince her eyes a bit. She spent a good bit of time prior to surgery not using her bad leg, so I think she got a lot of practice being on three. The leg she had amputated was one she had injured pretty badly prior to us getting her (it was broken in an accident and had pins and a plate in it). For a while we just thought this limping was tied to that injury. She in the past would "hurt" that leg and after she rested a bit it would go away. This past time the limping would not go away and then it started swelling. That's when we got the diagnosis.
I hope everything goes smoothly for you and Gus tomorrow. I'll be thinking about you guys tomorrow. Keep us updated on his progress. I hope he flies through tomorrow and starts his road to recovery.
So glad to hear Olive is doing well and has her spunky personality back! Yeah, moderating activity is a huge challenge for many people, but it sounds like you're doing a good job being conscientious of what she's up to. Congrats to both of you, hope the recovery continues to get better and better.
