Hi all,

Thank you so much for all the information and sharing!   my 8 year old Boston terrier had to right hind leg amputation last Monday.  The first days home he was surprising me with his recovery! It seems like on day 4 last Friday when the fentanyl patch wore off he turned into a different dog.  His energy level zapped and he began very disinterested in his favorite things.  Over the weekend he ate some and I continued with his gabapentin -and rimadly for pain.  Yesterday we went to the vet and were given a pill form of gabapentin and  tramadol.
Has anyone else during recovery seen a high post op followed by a crash?
thank you for sharing!

Hello and welcome, your future posts will not have to wait for approval.

I hope you don't mind that I moved your post here to your own thread.

Why did your boy need an amputation and what is his name?

It is quite common to see what seems to be a setback a few days after a pup comes home.  The good surgery meds are out of their system, any short term pain meds like patches or injections have worn off, and a new Tripawd tends to wear themselves out with their new gait.

You did a good thing by going to the vet to address his pain.  Most pups here are on pain meds for two to three weeks, some a bit shorter and some a little longer.  It's not unusual to need to tweak the dose or dosing schedule so keep an eye on him and let your vet know if you think he is in pain. One thing that often helps when giving multiple pain meds is to alternate the doses so they don't get everything at once- that helps keep pain meds on board more consistently.  Of course talk with your vet before changing anything.

My first Tripawd was a Pug named Maggie who lost a back leg to mast cell cancer and my current Tripawd is a little Pug mix named Elly who was hit by a car at 7 months old and lost a back leg. Maggie was 7.5 years old at the time of her amp and after she recovered she could do pretty much anything she wanted except she wasn't able to go up more than 2 or 3 stairs at a time.  Elly is now a little over 7 years old and can do anything a dog her size and age can do including flying up and down stairs.

How else can we help?

Tri-pug Maggie survived a 4.5 year mast cell cancer battle only to be lost to oral melanoma.

As Karen. noted, this is not unusual for all the reasons she pointed out,  She gave good input on the meds. Etc.

Continue to make sure he rests,  rests, rests and rests some more.  Short leashed potty breaks and back in for more rest.

He was a bit perkier when he first came home because  of all the good hospital meds.  Dogs are so resilient it's hard to remember  this is MAJOR surgery, all while adjusting  to three and on pain meds.

Give him  lots of gentle  massages up and down his spine  and around his neck and shoulder to relieve  any muscles tension .  Doing this over a warm towel out of the dryer is adds an extra bit of bliss to your pup.

Give him any yummy food he'll eat for now..,,warm rotisserie  chicken, grilled cheese,....whatever it takes for now.

Stay  connected  and  update when you can.

Thank you!!!!!! It is so nice having this forum. Woody!! it was a grade 3 fibrosarcoma. I first felt the lump end of January. We did a biology and had it removed. When the mass pathology report came back I started my rounds with oncologist and radiologist. At the end of the day everyone’s first course of action was amputation. My heart said no way but after additional research and consultation I decide to go forward. I had the muscle sent out for additional biopsy after amputation and they report no sighting of cancer, however he is scheduled for chemo end of the month.
setback would be the perfect term for what I’m seeing! The day after his patch was removed there was a significant slump! Now, he is so loaded up he is a vegetable! But he is still giving me kisses! I’m going to start staggering his meds. I just need people that have them been through this to help me know what is ok and not ok???? When should I be concerned about his behavior or setback!?!? Rest rest rest and eat sounds like what we are doing!
thank you Kate

Hi Kate and Woody! I'm glad you found us. It really is normal for a post-op crash like this. His body needs the rest. What happened was his brain and body came to an understanding:

Brain: "Hey, body, you're missing a leg. You need to slow down so your muscles can get strong."

Body: "Ohhhh, that's why I'm so sore. OK, gotcha. Zzzzzzzzz"

You will see his sparkle return. Just let him rest, encourage interactive brain games over physical activity so he doesn't wear his body out. In time, as you start to reduce the meds with your vet's approval, you will see the old Woody return.

The time to be concerned is if he stops eating, doesn't want to go outside to potty, and stops giving you kisses. Until then, as long as he is doing those things and resting without being anxious, that's what recovery is all about.

Keep us posted!

YAY for Woody! I can just picture you two soaking up the sunshine together. Taking it easy and relaxing is so healing for you both.

It was nice chatting with you today. How did staggering the meds work out?

Staggering was good.  I decided to give him 1 Tramadol today at noon and see how that does? He wants to eat grass so something is upsetting his stomach.  I have been giving him pretty much protein.  I was trying to add rice but he wasnt liking it.

any recommendations for food to mix in with chicken to help his tummy?

Yes! I wish I had joined this platform before surgery so I could have had a better grasp of what to expect!

Oh OK I hope the staggering helps today.

The upset stomach could be caused by any number of things. The more bland a food is, the better. Warmed is nice too and usually helpful. Stay away from dairy products if he has runny poop.
