Hello, tomorrow Winslow will be two weeks post op and if all goes well, he will receive his first dose of Carboplatin. I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with the drug and what to except. Any helpful hints would be greatly appreciated, thanks! I would like to do anything I can to help him through this!

Hi!  Many of us have used or are using carbo.  Jackson has had 2 doses of it.  His last one was last Friday, 2/1.  So far, here's what I can tell you: he's 58lbs and the actual administration of it takes ~10min, right into a vein.  They haven't yet had to shave down his leg to get a good vein.  Yes!  Since he's still very patchy from the amp and epidural.  His whole appt, including exam, bloodwork, and chemo takes <45min.  I thought he experienced a lot of sleepiness from carbo the first time, especially on days 3-5 afterward, but now that we're in that same window again....I'm not sure.  Jackson seems to have as much energy now as he did last week.  He was probably quite sleepy last time b/c at that point he was 2.5 weeks post-amp.  As part of Jackson's plan, he gets 10d of zenequin (an antibiotic) that we start the night after chemo.  I think that, plus all his other supplements, helped keep his white blood counts normal/high.  I think some oncos hold off giving an antibiotic until they know something isn't right, but you may not know until bloodwork is done...and that's often done on the day of treatment.  This can mean, you bring Winslow to his second treatment only to bring him home again, with antibiotics and no chemo.  Chemo, in this case, would be postponed ~2 weeks until his WBC recover.  It's worth asking about.  Some oncos like their patients have bloodwork done every week after chemo, to monitor WBC.  Frankly, for us, that'd be a pain and add costs.  I'd rather give an antibiotic and do no bloodwork between chemos.  Thankfully, we didn't have to use any other meds for nausea or diarrhea.  We have them in case, but there they sit, in his drawer.  I hope they stay there!  If your pup does get sick, make sure you have a plan - maybe have the meds already on hand, have bland foods, know who to call, know what symptoms warrant a vet visit, etc.  Again, we didn't have anything like this with Jackson.  He seems to handle it really well.  For those that don't, there are those meds.  You could also give meds to him the day before/day of treatment if he gets ill.  You'll have to wait and see, though.

I expected some nausea, so I continue to make sure his food is awfully tasty!  It works!  When we go, I make sure to bring a bed with us, as the vet's floor is kinda slippy.  This gives him something to grip during the exam.  Then, they take him to the back , where he gets his treatment.  There, he's on another bed, so I know he's comfy.  Then, I get to do some work for like 15min and Jackson returns.  VERY ready to go home!  Some folks celebrate each chemo day with McDonald's or BurgerKing....

Good luck!  Let us know how he does.  Good luck, Winslow!  You're gonna do great!!

ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12.  Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ!  No side effects.  We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments.  He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors!  Our love. Our funny little guy!

Magnum did 6 rounds of Carboplatin. She had to have a couple of treatments delayed by 1 week due to low WBC.  The last 2 rounds were the hardest on her (effects are cumulative).  The biggest issue for Magnum was some nausea. She only vomited once and that's because I was silly enough to give her a pigs ear.  But there were subtle signs that she had nausea (particularly in the car) or if she was picky with food and I found giving her the anti-nausea meds really helped perk her up.

Don't be afraid to ask your vet/oncologist lots of questions if you are uncertain or worried about anything (and of course ask on here as well).

Thank you both, so good to hear about Jackson and Magnum. I definitley have my list of questions to ask, I especially want the medications on hand just in case, better to be prepared.  Today Winslow is 13 days post op and I just saw him exhibit some of his happy spirit, I sure hope this doesn't send him backwards. The poor guy has been through so much lately. I will keep you posted and once again thank you for all the insight, this is such a wonderful forum! I hope Jackson and Magnum continue to thrive!!

It might be different for a kitty, but my Jill has had one round of carboplatin so far and the only side effects she had was a little bit of fatigue for 1-2 days after and she was very very thirsty for 24 hours afterwards, particularly for very cold water.

Good luck keep us posted!!

Jill is a 9-year-old tuxedo kitty. She was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in June 2012 on her toe in her right hind leg. Her leg was amputated on 12/12/12 and she completed four rounds of chemo (2 of Carbo, 2 of Doxy) in April 2013. Hi there Winslow and family.  My Max had 6 rounds of carbo.  He tolerated the first four very well; only experienced a bit of lethargy and disinterest in food about 24 hours after the treatment, and it only lasted for that day.  Max got sick on treatments 5 and 6; chemo is cumulative, so it was built up in his system by then.  You can ask the doctor to prescribe some meds for his tummy to help with nausea.  I think we were prescribed cerenia.  Good luck to Winslow, we'll be sending positive thoughts his way!
