Detour, my doberman, had his right front leg amputated 2 day ago (9/18/2012). The surgeon says he is up and walking around and "doing fantastic". The only problem is that he hasn't eaten since I took him there on Monday. I'm going to visit him today, and sit with him to try to get him to eat. He had a very troubled past before I adopted him, and is very clingy. Even at home, he doesn't like to eat if I'm not there. I get to bring him home on Saturday, so if he doesn't eat before that, he should when he is home. In the meantime, the waiting is killing me.

I bet he will be happy to see you and his food! I know it is always good to get them back home, but I think it really gives them a boost to get their bearings before coming home. Trouble stayed at the vet for 2 nights before coming home and she adjusted very quickly once home. I was probably more apprehensive than she was.

Glad to hear Detour's surgery went well, and he'll soon be home. Keep in mind he's on a lot of meds right now, he's in a place he (probably) doesn't like, and you're not there. I bet he'll eat when you show up! Good luck, and keep updating on Detour's progress!

Unfortunately a lack of appetite is pretty common. I'm going to be that between seeing you and coming down from the pain medications, he'll get it back. Take the stinkiest, most favoritest foods of his that you can find and he'll find them irrestible!
Remember, be strong. Even though he's had a tough go of it in the past, he can be strong and get through this as long as you believe he can.

My Finn was not much interested in food except his pills because I wrapped them in SALAMI. All my food rules went out the window with this process. I fed him whatever he showed interest in for a few days. I am convinced it was the pain meds more than anything. His normal appetite did come back and also his need for his normal routines. This next week or so will be rough. Be positive and encouraging for your baby and come to us for your own need for encouragement and venting. It will get better... much much better. Notice and take heart from the little accomplishments that will be made each day. He'll get there...and so will you 
I have to agree with Jerry (he is a very smart dawg)...stinky food, the stinky the better! Canned cat food, tuna fish, whatever it takes. Paws crossed for your boy! And remember to breathe!!!

Sorry you had to find us here. The meds can really mess with their tummies. We had to tempt our Abby to eat with all sorts of yummy, stinky stuff.

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Ditto to all of the above with regard to stinky stuff to wash down the meds. I remember when Magnum was having tummy troubles later in her journey and had to stay in hospital ovenight. She wouldn't eat the next day but when I went in to see if I was able to coax her into eating for me.
Glad to hear the surgery went well. Good luck with the recovery and be strong (we are hear to help).

Magnum: 30th May 2002 to 5th May 2012. Lost her back left leg to osteosarcoma on 5th Sep 2011. Lung mets found on 20th Mar 2012 but it was bone mets in the hip that ended her brave battle. Belle is 4 days out of surgery. She has not been eating much of her dog food yet, probably less than half of what she use to. She is however getting very good spitting out her pills so I have to give her more chicken peanut butter balls so I know she is not starving.
