I've contaced the Dr's office in the blog. Since it's friday I will have to wait ... I've also contaceted Dr Couto at Ohio State who is researching artemisinin . I've also contacted Colorado State about Metronomic therapy.
The Neoplasene, Dr Yasson, is in NY, I hope I hear from him soon..

Kim,
I would be very interested to hear what the doc at OSU has to say regarding Artemisinin . They are using a new protocol with one high weekly dose versus a low daily dose but I have been unable to find the protocol. If you don't have any luck let me know and maybe I can contact them. All I have is a link on the website for entry into the study.
I have used Neoplasene once on a dog with advanced mast cell cancer. The salve worked well to discretely remove individaul tumors and I used the local injections on a very large (cantaloupe-sized) skin mass. The owner elected not to start the oral solution since the dog deteriorated rapidly, but this could have been due to the very aggressive nature of mast cell tumors. He had gone to WSU and they tried chemo and Pred but even after 2 treatments the tumors were growing rapidly. I think that you can only get the protocol and product shipped direct to your veterinarian unless you find someone selling it online.
I think that the Pred is worth consideration, although it may cause increased thirst and you can't use it with an NSAID (too hard on the GI tract). If he is coughing I would use it.
Please let me know if you need me to try to research something for you...

Wow Pam, we had no idea, this is great to find out. What made you decide to try it? Did the dog's owner bring it up, or was it something you already knew about?

HI Pam & Tazzie,
I am unable to find a Dr in the area to help me. I actually receiced a call from Colorado University they said to try the animal hospital in Red Bank Nj they may use the metronimic protocol. Havn't heard anything. I called Ohio State and unless I can get him there (12 hours or more away) they have to see him & I emailed Dr Couto still no reply. I thought a Dr from out of state would be able to help me. Unless they can see him themselves appartly they can work with a Dr in the area. Univ of Penn, can't try any of these new drugs with permission. If you know of any Dr in the tri-state area to help me please refer me...

Kim,
Dr. Couto may be out of town. I think this is the time of year he goes to treat the galgos in Spain. Let me dig through old emails & find a contact for one of his assistants.

Try any of these emails: Greyhound@cvm.osu.edu That will put you in contact with Dr. Villa & Dr. Marin, and did you use this for Dr. Couto? couto.1@osu.edu

Jerry, I had heard of Neoplasene topical ("the black salve") several years ago and it seems to work well on solitary tumors. The client with the Bulldog with mast cell tumor found the website from Buck Mt Botanicals and I was willing to try anything to help her. The use of the oral solution and IV drug are highly experimental at this point but there are many doctors throughout the USA trying this, especially when all else fails.
Kim, I will see what I can find for you. What city do you live in? Most state laws require an actual exam by a vet before meds can be prescribed but some of the holistic things don't need a prescription. Hopefully we can get some info from OSU soon. Because the study is still in progress they might not release their dosing schedule for the Artemisinin . Your own vet can get the Neoplasene if you wanted to try that. I would go to the website and they have an extensive manuscript that can be downloaded that details use of the drug for different cancers and various success stories. That is what convinced me to try it! I think that there is also a list of vets that have experience using this product.

Mariah is a 10 y/old gr dane. 6 months after Hurrican Katrina, she developed mast cell. We had it removed, but she had difficulty with bleeding post operatively. She was great for two yrs and developed another lump on her leg, adjacent to the dew claw pad. The location is inoperable. In the past several months, she has developed a tumor in her armpit.
Her litter sister, Whisper, developed both mast cell and adenocarcinoma posr spay. She has had 3 surgeries in the past 3 weeks, and has been doing poorly (listless, no appetite).
They have both been on a low grain, low carb diet since Mariah was diagnosed. Now they are on a grain free diet.
I have searched alot of literature on the web. and decided to try artemisinin . I decided to give them a split dose of 300 mg/day. 5 days on, 3 off. After 2 days of treatment Whisper did a 180 turn around. She is playing and eating. You can look in her eyes and see that she feels good.
Mariah's golf ball sized tumor is now the size of a marble. The mast cell on her leg have not changed in size yet. I have also started her on topical artemisinin and added medical magnets for 30 min. I just strated that today, so I don't know if it will help.
Does anyone have any experience with topical art in mast cell? Any info will help. Thank you

That's great to hear! Glad it worked for Whisper, if you could post some of the links to that ifo you found it would be great. Please feel free to start a new topic.

For those of you in Northern California, I wanted to share that Linus' oncologist at UC Davis' Center for Companion Animal Health has started him on an oral neoplasene protocol to see if it will reduce the spindle cell tumor in his hock. We're only a few days in to the full dosage (we started with a week at a low dose) but I'll keep everyone posted on how it works. Linus' oncologist said he has seen good results so far in about 50% of the dogs that he has put on either the oral or topical protocol of the blood root derivative. We are using Buck Mountain as our source. The Doc is documenting all, so hopefully "Big L" (as they've nicknamed him at the teaching hospital) will have success.
Linus requires a big meal of bacon and meatballs topped kibbles to be able to stomach the extract but he's not had any stomach upset so far (touch wood) -- and being a Dane he generally has a super sensitive stomach.
Please, oh please, think tumor reducing thoughts for us !!!

You got it! Big L is in good hands at UC Davis. That's where Jerry had his amputation – good people, amazing facility. Keep us posted on Linus' progress in a new topic!
