For those of you that don't know my 6 year old rottie was diagnosed with histiocytic sarcoma and had his front leg amputated. The Oncologist wants to do Chemo and said that its hard on the liver, she recommended a pill to help protect it that is $100 a month or milk thistle as that's a main ingredient in it. I've started him on milk thistle, just wondering if anyone else has used it the place I got it from said its great for protecting the liver and recommends it for all dogs.

I also have him on Glucosamine and Fish Oil as other supplements and a raw diet with various proteins including tripe until he starts Chemo, then he will probably start freeze dried kibble.

Yes, I'm using milk thistle for Libby.  We are on week 5 of her recovery.  She has been on metronomic therapy for 16 days and I started the milk thistle about 4 days ago.  She will have blood work in a couple of weeks.  I'm not sure if that includes checking the liver but I intend to ask.  Libby also gets half grain free kibble and half home cooking, liquid fish oil, probiotics and MUSH (a supplement made from a mixture of different mushrooms).  She has been on Glycoflex III for joint support for over 2 years.  Your rottie is very handsome! :)

Liberty (Libby) was diagnosed with OSA on 1-22-13.  Right front amputation on 1-31-13. No IV Chemo. Metronomic Therapy started 2-19-13 along with supplements and some home cooking. Lungs clear until 1-06-14.  She's still her happy, hoppy, bossy self.  Living the dog life to the fullest and a proud Winter Warrior. :) RIP my Libby 4-21-03 to 3-19-14

Your onco doc sounds very forward thinking!

Tripawds vet expert Tazziedog used milk thistle when her Mastiff Tazzie was fighting cancer. Here is a blog post about how she used it.

When my quad-paw Matti was diagnosed with liver disease my vets put her on denamarin (was $80/month for a 35 lb. dog-OUCH!) which is a combo of milk thistle and SAM-e.  Worked great.  Her liver numbers went down dramatically.  I would purchase it from Amazon because it was much cheaper.  Good luck with your treatment!
