I finally looked up metronomics ,, my takeaway: low dose chem given every day.. Is this being used after the typical 6 doses of chemo? are dogs on this forum using metronomics ? How does a vaccine trial correlate? perhaps starting metronomics after the vaccines has been given.. any reports from the past few months showing this is the future of treatment? my vet hasn't discussed this? perhaps it is discussed after the 6 weeks? thanks..
I read some report, that said metronomics was not working well,, after chemo,, etc,, looking for the report to post
Hi Luke,
Eurydice was on a metronomics protocol (daily combination of chemo, anti inflammatory and antibiotic) after her six sessions of Carboplatin were finished.
Sadly, she still developed lung mets so we then switched to Doxorubicin.
Although metronomics did not work for her, it did work for lots of other dogs here so wait for others to share their experiences on this.
What breed is your dog and what’s his/her name?
Hugs and cuddles 😘😘🐮💫✨🌟🌹
Eurydice 77kg/170lb Great Dane limping end of April 2016, amputation (right front leg/osteosarcoma) 4 May 2016 6 courses of carboplatin followed by metronomic therapy, lung mets found 30 Nov 2016. 3 courses of doxorubicin, PET scan 26 Jan 2017 showed more mets so stopped chemo. Holistic route April 2017. Lung X-ray 5 May 2017 showed several tennis ball size mets, started cortisone and diuretics. Miss Cow earned her XXL silver wings 12 June 2017, 13 months and 1 week after amputation and 6 1/2 months after lung mets, she was the goofiest dawg ever and is now happily flying from cloud to cloud woof woofing away :-)
Just one more thing.
Eurydice’s oncologist said there was a nasty potential side effect we should watch out for, called sterile hemorragic cystitis.
It is caused by the chemo and normally it presents itself with blood in the urine.
Eurydice never developed it but, if my memory is not failing me, Nitro did.

Hello Luke. If you click on the link it will take you to the latest of what we know about metronomics . Our most recent news report is here, from 8/17:
Metronomic Chemotherapy FAQs for Tripawds
It has been around for a long time and used on both people and animals. The protocol (oral chemo, NSAID, fish oil and sometimes doxycycline) hasn't changed much over the years, and until the osteosarcoma vaccine came along, has been the most successful way to delay metastasis.
What you will find is that some oncologists experience great success with it, while others experience just mediocre results. Some say it works, some day it doesn't. It all depends on the personal experiences of the oncologist who is prescribing it. Whether or not your dog receives it is entirely up to you.
In our opinion it worked well for our Jerry, and gave him seven months of additional quality time with us after mets were discovered.

As far as how it works with the osteosarcoma vaccine, from what Dr. Vaughan told us, it remains to be seen. We asked him if the vaccine would ever replace metronomics and he said that remains to be seen. I assume that metronomics wouldn't be necessary if the vaccine is doing its job, but I'm not an oncologist.

Dogs using metronomics cannot receive the vaccine. Past metronomic use may not preclude vaccination.
I understand that with metronomics , at least one drug, Cytoxan, is an immunosuppressant. In that the vaccine is intended to stimulate the immune system, it makes sense they shouldn't be mixed.
