OMD!! As soon as I posted todays update Max hopped all the way outside down the ramp and into our 1/2 dog pen all by himself!!! He hopped around a little and then took a HUGE poop!! Yaay for poop and getting up and mobile. This dog continues to amaze me! How far we have come in 2 1/2 days! Bob is over the moon happy with his "buddy". I have warned him about the going backward days that are probably coming, but right now we are being dog and wallowing in todays victory.
Hi Linda, welcome to the roller coaster ride of recovery! Keep focusing on the pawsitive things like you are and it will all start to fall into place. I remember the first few nights Nitro was home it seemed like all I did all night long was pet him and rub him to keep him comfortable. I was a total zombie the first couple of weeks. And, since Nitro wouldn't eat for the first week, we had no other "stuff" for a long time either.
I'm so glad your husband got to meet Nitro - and watch him put on a show! I freaked out when he just jumped out of the back of my truck before my husband got the leash on him. I'm sure it was a sight seeing a 3 legged Doberman hop all over McDonald's parking lot. But he sure had a smile on his face while he was doing it!
Keep on keeping on with Max, you guys will get through this. Baby steps. (or hops)

Nitro 11 1/2 yr old Doberman; right front amp June 2014. Had 6 doses carboplatin, followed by metronomic therapy. Rocked it on 3 legs for over 3 years! My Warrior beat cancer, but couldn't beat old age. He crossed the Bridge peacefully on July 25, 2017, with dignity and on his terms. Follow his blog entitled "Doberman's journey"

Make no mistake about it, Max IS impproving! And I know I sound like a broken record, but it is waaaay too early in recovery to be expecting much more than what he's doing!
Let's see...hmmm....he pees into a Cool Whip container...he drinks water out of an ice cream container. Perhaps you could try having him poop in a potato chip bag and see if that works!! Nah, no worries that he's only pooped since Wednesday, really. Some people here add a tablespoon spoon of pumpkin to their meals to help "move them along".
My Happy Hannah was one of those who just could not get comfortable and, honest to goodness, I don't think she slept more than fifteen minutes at a time either for days! I think big dogs just have a harder time getting comfortable and processing things.
Yeah, the anxiety pill shoul help....make sure you save some for Max after you and Bob split it up!
Remember to scratch up and down a lot along the areas Max can no longer reach, including mug and ears. Having an itch and not being able to get to it can certainly cause some restlessness.
Also, if a dog is used to sleeping a certain way...on a certain side...curling up a certain way, etc. ..if they sre unable to do thst on their amp. side that causes a little frustration at first. My Happy Hannah took FIVE WEEKS before she laid on her amp. side. For her, I think that was the m ost so had sleep she'd had in weeks!
Thanks for all your great updates! You really are doing a great job!! Paaaaatience!!! Sooo hard to have patience but just know Max is doing great in his recovery! Really!
Much love to all!

Max had another good day today. He's getting around great and wants to be interactive with my two dogs. It's funny to watch all three of them lay close to each other during the day. Seems they all want to be together even my 16 year old. I have a 16 year old husky/shepherd mix and a 4 year old collie. At some points it can be quite a zoo. We kept his walking down to 4 times outside for potty breaks only then pretty much back in to rest. I don't want him to overdue this early in the process and go backwards. The anxiety pill helped a lot. He seems to be more Max on it and was able to get some good sleep. We can give him 3 at a time but we decided to start with one to see how that worked for him and it seems to do the trick. I figure if one does it why give him more than he really needs. I will be so glad when his incision is healed because right now that is what I worry about the most. So far we have just laid a t-shirt over it and I've caught him licking once or twice but stops as soon as we tell him to. If not he'll have to wear the cone of shame . I just can't believe how far he has come in less than 4 days. It amazes me. The harness that Paula loaned us is a true lifesaver! While he can get up on his own we have been "helping" him to save on that other back leg. Then we pretty much let him do his pottying by himself and just use the leash attached to "guide" him back in. It has truly been a lifesaver and we should get the one we ordered next week sometime. I would recommend the ruffwear harness by webmaster to anyone. I just want to thank you all again! I could not have done this journey by myself without the support you all have given me. It truly touches my heart and brings tears to my eyes.
I'm so happy things are going well for you guys! Sounds like you have a good grasp on the situation. We can't wait to meet the rest of your family, especially Max! Keep up the good work!

We hit a little bump in the road. Max being Max managed to have a bit of a bleeder yesterday. Called our local vet here in Wausau and $102.00 later he came and said no he's fine. Had a little different spot sort of oozy yesterday and today it was leaking fluid tinged with blood. Another vet call. This time she said there is an opening there but not to worry she wanted to leave it so the fluid leaks out and it will heal up and just to watch for infection. It seems to have slowed up but then of course everytime you take him out to potty it starts over. She didn't say it was a seroma but I'm thinking that is what it is. Instead of building up it's leaking out. I had colon surgery a few years ago and developed a seroma so this seems quite similar to mine. Have any of you dealt with this at all? She said aside from that small area the rest of the incision is looking fantastic. We seem to have the meds figured out finally and he is resting better at night. I just mainly wanted to know if any of you experienced this at all with the leaking fluid. On the plus side Max was the perfect patient today. Just mainly chilled out. Thanks guys! You lift me up when I need you!!
Aww Max! Poor guy.
Yep, that does sound familiar. If the fluid is more watery than bloody, that's likely the case. Sometimes there's a lot of it that constantly leaks out, sometimes it builds up and needs extracting, just depends.
Give Max a smooch from us, he's such a great dawg.

And getting overall good reports on Max lifts us up too!
Yep, just a bump in the road for Mr. Max! Just keep an eye on jt and do your best to keep it clean. I'm starting to think he likes going to the vet so he can watch people go ga ga over him! He is a Rock Star ya' know!!
HUGS TO ALL!

Oh shoot! I wish I had seen your posts sooner!
Max shouldn't have had all of his medications at the same time - try to space them out. For Murphy I wrote out a medication sheet, down the side I wrote the name of the med, across the top I wrote the times needed to be given, and then whoever gave them just crossed them off. It also helped when we started to wean him off. Sorry so late in the game!
It does sound like Max is doing better though! Yeah!
