Hello its us again

Jack is the most fabulous boy taking everything in his stride, her really is an example of three legs and a spare, we are now coming up to 7 months post amputation with 6 sessions of carboplatin.

To keep you up to date we are now half way through our first month of Masivet tablets, they are a more targeted therapy - I suppose like palladia. Unfortunately the US have withdrawn this drug, here in the UK it isn't generally available for Osteosarcoma but we are lucky enough to be on a small trial to see how effective it is. The plan is that we get the drugs for 6 months and he is monitored, bloods and urine, once a month to see whether they are making any difference to him. Who knows? but I reckon if it helps him then that is all good, if it adds to knowledge for someone else that is all good, if it gives him even a few more days, weeks or months then that is all good if we can do anything to knock this hateful disease back a bit then that is all good. By the way we haven't done any more XRays or another CT scan to see if he has mets, he didn't have them before amputation and his lungs sound clear so far, the vets haven't wanted to do them either

So far he has tolerated the drugs well, only been sick once and when I looked I realised it was because he had just coughed up a load of fur that he must have licked up from some where - dopey dog! otherwise all looking good.

The dosage he is on is 200mg with his morning food

Keep everything crossed for us that this helps, if not us then gives more knowledge for someone else

Judith thank you for the update! It's wonderful that Jack is doing so well, that just made our day!

Yes I have no idea why our government pulled the Masivet but I"m glad you are able to try it and that it's working (and yes, it's a targeted therapy like Palladia). Keep us posted and we'll keep our paws & fingers crossed for lots of good times ahead. Yay Jack!

Love your attitude!! An attitude like that is a powerful "drug" that has to surround Jack with a positive healing energy!!

Really like your vet's attitude about xrays too! You are doing everything there is to do for your boy, so additional xrays wouldn't make a difference one way or another.

Thank you so much for sharing the protocol you are following. It certainly sounds hopeful. Most importantly, Jack is doing really great getting on with living life ro the fullest! 🙂

HAPPY SEVEN MONTHS AMPUVERSARY!!! Here's cheering for a gazillion more!! The whole tripawd community is cheering for Jack!!

Jack has been doing so well, we took ourselves to a Rally obedience competition yesterday where Jack tried to get the last qualifier for his next Level, unfortunately he didn't qualify due to a silly error on my part, but he was wagging his tail and Sooo happy all day.

Roll on this evening and a phone call to say that his white blood cell count was low when taken at his check  last week and that there was protein in his urine. I am going to chose to believe that this is like when he was on Carboplatin and that he needs a couple of days off the meds for the levels to return to normal, keep your fingers very very crossed for him and that this is nothing more than his body needing a couple of days off the Masivet

Well Jack is still a first place champ to us! Sweet pup.

Yep, I'll bet that's all it is, just the same kind of reaction last time. We see low WBCs all the time, he'll bounce back after his break, just wait. We'll keep paws, fingers, toes & tails crossed just the same. Keep us posted.

So we heard from the oncologist, leave him off the tablets for two weeks and re do his bloods then. They went worried so like I thought it's just he needs a break from the chemo.

he is such a lovely boy, we just want to do the best we can for him

Well we haven't managed to continue with the trial meds 🙁

After having the low WBC and resting for two weeks we put him back on to the masivet and went to his appointment for the third month of drugs and sadly his bloods cam back low again so he has been taken off the trial - the report from the Vet school is copied below.

So we are just about at 9 months post-amp, Jack is very fit and well with no apparent evidence of deterioration or mets so we will just let the boy live his life as he wants drug free and happy.

I hope our participation will help them decide if this is a drug of value for others, sadly not for us at this stage

History

Jack was seen for a recheck on the 11th of May after being on a clinical trial with adjunctive masitinib for osteosarcoma since the beginning of March. At his first recheck one month after starting treatment, Jack was neutropenic and one of his liver parameters was raised. This normalized after a two week treatment break and he re-started his medication. You reported that Jack is well in himself and that his energy levels are good.

Clinical exam

On clinical exam jack was bright and alert and no abnormalities were detected. He appeared to be managing well on three legs.

Investigations

Haematology : White blood cells low

Biochemistry : Mildly raised liver parameter

Urine dipstick : protein in the urine

Conclusion

Unfortunately Jack’s white blood cells have decreased and his liver parameter has raised after restarting the masitinib. As we haven’t yet got any strong clinical evidence that there is a benefit to use masitinib as adjunctive therapy to the standard amputation and carboplatin protocol we think that we are taking a unnecessary risk by continuing Jack on this drug. We would be pleased if you or your veterinarian could update us on any changes to Jack’s condition in the future. We have sent them a letter explaining that Jack has stopped treatment.

I really applaud the clinical trial vets.p for putting Jack's wellbeing first above all else!!way-cool I sometimes wonder if that's always the case...not intentionally, but just wanting to proceed, almost subconsciously, to try and see all of the "what ifs".

Jack.is feeling great and that's all that matters!!

HAPPY NINE MONTH AMPUVERSARY JACK!! clap You are an inspiration on soooo many levels!!

Keep on keeping on! You are a tripawd Rock Star!!superstar
