Hey guys! I didn't know if anyone would be interested, but at the clinic I work at we amputated the front right leg of a male cat 4 days ago. The surgery went well. He was having the amputation after his new adopted mom brought him in for an old injury to the leg. His joints had fused and his leg was completely stiff. He was on antibiotics pre surgery due to infection in the leg. We amputated mid humerus. And he seemed to adapt really quickly and went home the next day. Unfortunately he came back to us today with some swelling and slight draining at the incision. We sedated him again and discovered that his incision had abscessed, and very quickly. His owner did everything right, he was still on antibiotics and rest, and she brought him in at the first sign of a problem. But his abscess was very large and his fever was pretty high. We were able to drain the abscess and get some stronger antibiotics on board. We placed a drain in the incision (I placed it and was quite proud of myself I might add). He's now recovering at the clinic over the weekend and seems to be doing ok. Just a cautionary tale that things can go downhill quick with an amputation incision and to make sure the incision gets looked at daily and taken care of.

Domino had his left front leg amputate on May 13th 2014 after being hit by a car. He's now living a happy healthy life on three legs :)
Cassie you are such an awesome vet tech! Thank you for this information and the photo, you are absolutely right about being pro-active and in communication with your vet after surgery. I'm so glad the kitty is OK! What's his name? And you should definitely be proud of placing that drain, that's awesome.
P.S. We are hoppy to assign you the Tripawds "Vet Expert" badge to your profile (vets and techs qualify), you've been a great help so far with information like this and we look forward to your insight for a long long time!
