I originally posted under Maggies Amputation 3/22. Anyone interested in background and experiences with the amputation can read those posts. It was suggested I begin a new topic title with Maggie on her treatment and recovery, so here goes.
Great news! It is always so nice to see the posts go from "we are tired, she is sore, we are worried" to "She is doing very well".
Good luck with the chemo!

Zeus was a Husky mix diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 11. A visible lung met and suspicious spot on his liver meant a poor prognosis-six weeks was our vet's best guess. We decided to fight for our boy and his right front leg was amputated on 12/1/11. We did six rounds of chemo, changed his diet and spoiled him completely rotten. We were blessed with 10 great months after diagnosis. Against the odds, the lung met remained a single met and grew very little over those months. A wonderful furbaby with the most gentle spirit, he fought with a strength that we never imagined he possessed. We have no regrets...

Glad to hear she is making progress every day.
I hope she handles the chemo well. My Maggie did about 6 months of chemo (for mast cell cancer) and did pretty well. A little fatigue, and rarely a little nausea- but for the most part she did just fine.

Glad to hear she is doing well. Be prepared to play Guess What the Dog Will Eat after chemo. With Abby it was always something different and usually very plain. After the first session, the only thing she would eat was some plain pasta. Hope Maggie does well with the treatments.

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Oh good luck this week Maggie! Where will you be having treatment?

Good luck with the chemo! We are on our third round, and so far only minimal side effects. The latest is the food problem that others have mentioned - but I feel pretty good that it took three rounds to get to that point. A little fatigue...but more not being able to play quite as long as he used to. It seems like every dog really handles it differently!

Tell Maggie to keep up the good fight! As others have said, each dog handles Chemo differently; we had to adjust Rusty's diet several times during his 12 months of Chemo treatments. Nausea and diarrhea were his most common side effects.
Chuck & Rusty
Rusty is a Labradoodle who was diagnosed with level 3 Fibrosarcoma on January 16th, 2010 and had his left hind leg amputated on January 25th, 2010 five days before his 18 month birthday. Please see Rusty's blog @rusty.tripawds.com. He is putting up one heck of a fight against this terrible disease.
This is very good news! I hope Maggie continues to do well!
Comet - 1999 to 2011
She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
Maggie did really well this morning. She acted very happy and normal after her first treatment. Her day has been super. She ate well and has shown steady improvement even over yesterday. Maybe she will be one of those who has little to no side effects from the Chemo. That would be great!!! We are really proud of our Mags. Hopefully tomorrow will be equally as good.

That really is great news that Maggie is handling the chemo so well. I noticed that Tai was a bit tired a couple of days after the chemo but otherwise handled it just fine so with any luck Mags will sail on through! Swimming already? Wow! Sounds as though she has really bounced back! YAY.
Tai – 9 yr old lab. Diagnosed Osteosarcoma Dec 18/09. Front right leg amputated Dec 21/09. Started chemo Jan 7/10. Lung mets discovered Sept 16/10. Valiant to the end on Oct 26/10 when cancer reappeared in a leg and we made the decision to set her free. Forever in my heart where not even cancer can take her from me.
I'm so happy that Maggie is doing well after her first chemo treatment. I know that takes a weight off your mind. I hope you continue to see progress.
My Edward will start chemo on Thursday, so I hope I will have the same good news to report. As everyone says, each dog is different.
Maggie continues to amaze. Brought her to our Lake House yesterday (she loved to be here pre-surgery) and she is in her glory. The most surprising thing is she can climb our outside stairs (14 steps) with little to no help. The living area is on the second floor. It's the going down when she needs help. We have her life vest to aid her which really works well.
Maggie continues to enjoy every day, especially when someone stops by to visit her. I had serious doubts before her surgery but now after looking back; I would recommend the amputation and treatments to others facing a similar decision. Clearly have had some tough times but now after one month and a few days we have our Maggie back happy and pain free.
