Our beautiful berner, Maggie, was diagnosed with a sarcoma in her hind leg below the knee. Most likely osteosarcoma but several needle biopsies were inconclusive. While we were waiting for more stains to be done her bone cracked 🙁 So she had surgery the next day, once the CT scan came back with clear lungs/abdomen.
She had surgery on Friday came home the day after surgery and is doing great. She's been resting on her dog bed, and gets up to go outside to the bathroom a few times a day. I can't believe how well she is doing. We've been lucky, surgery recovery pain under control with gabapenten, metacam and a fentenyl patch. To date she hasn't cried out at all. Today she pulled me down the driveway and down the sidewalk a couple of houses, thinking she was going to the park. So every day getting stronger. I can't believe the difference - she was in agony with the bone pain, and the broken bone, and this is such an improvement.
Maggie is wearing a onsie (vet med wear) and it keeps her from sniffing her incision. We put the cone on when we are giving the onsie a wash.
She perks up the most when visitors come to see her. Her little sis (2 year old berner) is staying close and dropping toys on her bed for her.
The bone was sent for another biopsy, and we will start chemo after we know what we are dealing with.
So grateful we still have her.
Christine I'm so glad you posted here, thank you! And you shared those photos too. Maggie is ADORABLE! And that sparkle in her eyes and skip in her step says it all. She is going to kick butt on 3!
I hope that you get some pathology results soon. It feels better to have a plan when you know what you're up against. You'll get there!
Keep us posted and let us know if you have any questions.
Maggie is soooo pretty! And my goodness, her gait is so fluid and seems so effortless. To see that this early on is quite amazing.
Quite a nice Valentine's gift having her home so she can give love to you....and you can give love to her.♥️♥️
Slow and easy sweet Maggie. You've got this👍.
Hugs

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
It’s therapeutic to read others stories and knowing we are not alone in this journey. Maggie is a pretty dog. Good luck in your journey. Our Lacey is almost 5 years old and we had her left front leg amputated. It’s been three weeks since surgery and she is all but back minus the leg of course. It bothers me to see her without a leg but the joy in her face makes that pain less.
Thank you for sharing your story!
