Loooove the poctures!! Luka is such a handsome boy! His "white socks" make him look quite dapper! 🙂
Luka certainly his enjoying his "off leash" adventure out in nature 🙂 And it continues to get better Luka with even more loff leash excursions!

Well, we had an interesting day today. So it's Chemo #1, Day #2, the day the vet said there might be some nausea. Luka woke up around 7 and had his usual breakfast, and then around 10 started to feel it and was making some gagging noises, which I am so familiar with from his sensitive tummy over the years. I then felt like I was at the med crossroads again. I could 1) go for the metronidazole; 2) let him "gut" it out unless it got really bad; or 3) try something else. My first impulse was to have him gut it out, but he was pacing and panting again for a couple of hours, so I went online to look for more natural solutions and found this person who has some things to say: http://www.natu.....omach.html , one of which is to try honey in his water, which I did. At first he wasn't thirsty, but after I gave him a bone, he was. He drank a bunch of the honey water and within about half an hour was sleeping in the sun, and the episode was completely over.
The pet store near my house has lots of natural remedies, so I visited them next and spoke to some really knowledgeable folks who gave me samples of pumpkin and a probiotic and a natural joint/muscle thing that evidently replaced painkillers for the older dog of the woman who works at the store. She gave me samples of that, too. Within the next week, I might try phasing out the gaba.
This afternoon, I took Luka to a nearby field and met my friend who has a puppy with whom Luka had played before the amp. They played again! Luka was crouching and lunging with Sandy. Then he rolled over onto his back and rubbed in the grass. When I was looking away, he charged across the field at the crows, which I am sort of happy I did not see, since I am worried about the remaining back leg blowing out during an enthusiastic spurt. Anyway, it was a joyful afternoon followed by a no-nausea dinner with pumpkin pulp, and then the usual begging at the table (full disclosure) when dinner guests were here. I am STUNNED by the big, happy day.Â

WAY TO GO LUKA!!! 🙂 You've got me grinning ear to ear (again)! Lpve hearing you had such a great time playing with your Pal Sandy....And trying to "eat crow"! 🙂 🙂
Glad to know your tummy upset got settled down pretty quickly. Interesting about the honey water helping out.
Let's keep these BIG STUNNINGLY HAPPY DAYS coming!! 🙂
Hugs sweet boy!

Yay! Here's to joyful play times and table begging again! Did you get any pictures?
Good for you for being observant about his activity. You are so right for doing so! Minimize those explosive activities as best you can so he doesn't injure himself. I know it's a fine line to let him be a dog while watching the activity, but you'll get the hang of it.
Oh, before you phase out the gaba check with your vet to ensure it's done gradually and without doing any harm. It's one of those drugs that has to be tapered off.Â
Keep up the great job!

Thanks about the tip on ending the gabapentin.
I think the sprint made Luka pretty sore yesterday, but today he seems a bit better. I hope I do get the hang of monitoring that. I don't want him to have to be on the leash all the time, but he is so driven to chase birds, squirrels, whatever moves, that it is tricky.
No pics from sunny Sunday! I want to upload video but I think that needs to happen through a youtube link or something like that.

Well . . . it's been a nice two weeks of recovery. The cone is off and a doughnut is around Luka's neck when I am not home because he continues to lick. His hair is really red, like dark blood, although there do not seem to be scabs of any kind. I took him to his surgeon for a check-in about strength and flexibility, and she told me that dogs have some kind of enzyme in their saliva, and if they lick persistently, it will turn red. I have seen pink hair on little white dogs before and never knew what that was about! So something new. Otherwise, he has been given permission to return to mostly normal, unrestricted activities. She definitely wants him to have some off-leash time in the backyard, in addition to our regular walks. 🙂
It has been two weeks since carboplatin, and test results from Saturday say low white blood cells. My regular vet told me to give Luka an antibiotic, and the onco tech said it wasn't all that important unless it's still low (or lower) with next week's check. Any input anyone has on that would be great.
Thanks much.

Low WBC is normal with days 7 - 14 after chemo. Â It means the chemo is working. Â They will recheck before his next chemo, and if it remains too low, they will just delay a week. Â No big deal (especially sense he seems to be feeling good otherwise), and very common.
When we had chemo, the metro was for diarrhea. Â We had Cerenia for nausea. Â After chemo 2, Otis was put on Pepcid A/C for indigestion. Â Just mentioning it - if the honey water works, stick with it.
Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.  Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma. Â
Wherever they are, they are together.
Oh Luka! Glad to hear he is rocking on through! We get 4 days of Cerenia tabs after each Chemo dose and that seems to have kept Astro's belly fairly neutral. Go with whatever works for you guys. We do also take metronidazole after each round, as well. Hasn't seemed to have had any side effects, so I've gone with it. Keep on hopping!
Cheers,
Kat and Astro
Thanks for your replies about the dip in cell count. I did not give the antibiotic. White blood cells were up this weekend (fine week 1, down week 2 and fine week 3), so they did another chemo treatment. Things seem to be going along pretty much as the vets have predicted.
Gotta hand it to Luka--he is such a champ. He just barrels through all this stuff and then wants to go for a walk and another walk . . . and eat my chicken scraps and whatever. Life as usual.Â

Great news! Â That dip you report is absolutely normal, and really just means the chemo is having the desired effect.

Keep forgetting my camera when we are out rolling in the sunshine. I will remember next time!
We are having a little weirdness right now. I noticed the skin on Luka's incision-side belly was becoming black, as was his penile sheath (TMI?) so I was worried that he had some kind of infection due to low WBC after the second chemo. As we know, he is kind of a licky guy these days, also. I took him in to my regular vet, who is in close contact with both onco and surgeon (they just cc everything to everyone anytime we show up) and also took in a urine sample because the emergency folks I talked to on the phone last night suggested it might be a UTI. Turns out there is some bacterial thing going on (but it isn't huge), so now he is on the antibiotics I never gave him after chemo 1. BUT the really good news (I think) is that my vet found an errant SUTURE that the surgery techs had missed, the onco had missed, the surgeon had missed six weeks post-op on the PT check, and I had missed! Its location was exactly the neurotic lick spot. It would be wonderful if that stray were the source of all lick evil! The vet also gave me some topical stuff for the black places (lick bacteria), which she thinks will fix it. Wow. If it is that easy to get through the lick, we are licky LUCKY. I am so glad they found the suture for many reasons, including what I had begun to think was a neurosis. I am just glad he was not biting it or pulling at it.
Sunny day on muddy trail yesterday and humping it through a shallow creek. Life is good!
