Yes, we have three dogs in our pack and Atlas really didn't want anything to do with anyone except Mommy for the first couple weeks and sometimes he even recoiled from me which broke my heart but now I know it was all the drugs.  His sissy Sophie was a big incentive to get him up to go potty and eat his meals and move around the house.  If she was getting attention or food, he wanted some too.  I used it to our advantage.  And I really focused on what Karen said...I made sure I went about business and usual and kept to the normal routine and kept acting as everything was normal and fine.  Before long both of us believed it and found our new normal and today I sometimes forget that we are even dealing with cancer.

Don't worry about the walks and try to take it slow.  The first few weeks home should be about recovery, it is major surgery he just went through.  Atlas only went about 25 feet to go potty and then back inside for the first three weeks home.  And today, he still can only cover about 1/4 of the distance he used to for exercise, but that's ok as it's all about quality not quantity.

Keep us posted on that handsome Harry.

Our 5 year old Leo was also diagnosed with osteosarcoma this year, front leg, and underwent amputation the following week. He is now 3 months post op and doing amazingly. Like you, he did struggle to start with, though like most we found that once he was off meds and had had time to adjust (3-4 weeks for us) he was away. His quality of life now is excellent. He gets around well and we are now able to take him out to the park for runs without any trouble. While I'm sure all dogs cope differently, our boy is an example of how resilient the Leo's are and how they do bounce back. As a side note, despite what we'd read we found the chemo experience quite manageable. Vincent completed his last round this last week and managed to get through with minimal discomfort and no sickness, so I would say overall his quality of life has been excellent. We have no regrets at all!

Hello Vincent and family, thanks so much for sharing your experience and joining our community from New Zealand! We have a few other New Zealandars here so welcome welcome!

I'm happy to hear Vincent is doing well. We don't get too many Leonburgers so it's always great to hear your experiences (Leo's are such awesome dogs!). What kind of chemo did he have?

We would love to see some photos! Here's a post about how do add photos.

Hi Vincent and family,
Sorry I dont get on here as much as I'd like and have only just seen your post. Yours and Harry's stories are scarily similar! I hope your boy continues to do well, sounds like he is fighting fit. 3 weeks ago we discovered that our Harry has lung mets so we are on a whole new treatment protocol....and a whole new leg of the journey. Leo's really are amazing....Harry is even now still swimming 3 or 4 times a week and apart from some tiredness you really wouldn't know there was much wrong. Thinking of you and yours and hoping that Leo spirit keeps fighting for you :)
