Hi, my name is Joe & I have an 8 year old black lab named Paxton. We rescued him from a local shelter 4 years ago. About 2 months ago he started limping & we started making vet appointments. Xrays revealed fractured shoulder & what the vet called graying of the bone which is most likely osteosarcoma. I was told that where the fracture is it could not be pinned or repaired and the cancer would also not let it heal. Paxton had his left front limb amputated on December 22nd 2016. Me and my family are working through the recovery process and so far Paxton is doing well. We are awaiting the results from them sending the limb out to determine the type of cancer and our next treatment options.
Welcome Joe, Paxton and family, your future posts will not have to wait for approval.
I'm sorry you are dealing with cancer in your boy, but good that Paxton is through surgery and is doing well!
If you haven't already you might look through The Reading List. We also have ebooks you can download from the Tripawds Library. Both have lots of information from this site on amputation, recovery and treatment.
Not the Christmas you had planned! I'm glad you found us here, we can help!

Can't wait to see pictures of Paxton!!
Sounds like he had a fairly " normal recovery", if there is such a thing as normal!!
Please stay connected and let us know any questions you may have or how we can help in anyway! This whole process can be ...er...intense, to say the least!! But once recovery is complete a d Paxton starts getting all his sparkle back without that painful leg, you can get on with enjoying life to the fullest...just like Paxton!!
A d btw, there's nothing more fun than spoiling a tripawd, especially a sweet Lab!
We look forward to following all the upcoming victories of Paxton!
Hugs to all!

Hi Joe and Paxton. My Otis, and his sister, Tess, were also black labs. (OK, Otis was part Dane, which accounts for the 106 pounds, but still lab at heart). Glad to hear that things are going well!
Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016. Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016. Lung mets August 25, 2016. Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016. Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.
Wherever they are, they are together.
Welcome to Tripawd Nation Joe and Paxton! You've found the right place to get support for sure. You're already past the awful first week and I'm so glad to hear Paxton is doing well. He's a lab, he needs to get back to chasing balls! Lots of info here on your options going forward. Peruse the site and make a list of questions to ask the oncologist. This is such an overwhelming time and it's not like any of us were prepared for this journey.
Best wishes on a speedy recovery from one retriever to another 🙂
