Hi,

So we have decided to proceed with amputation for my Bella-bean. Vets have confirmed the cancer in her leg is a sarcoma and there has been no metastases anywhere else. Her bloodwork also looks like she is otherwise healthy so surgery and chemo are up next!

Lots of questions to come for recovery and chemo I'm sure but in the meantime I was wondering if anyone had ideas for any last minute 4 legged adventures or activities? I know within the tri-pawd community most pets recover quite well and learn to do everything just as before but I'm wondering if there is anything you snuck in before surgery.

Bella is otherwise well and running/playing on her leg as if there is nothing wrong. I also feel that with surgery happening so soon what is the harm in 'pushing it' over the next few days.

TIA!

Hi Courtney and Bella! OK so you got the news nopawdy wants but it's really good that there are no metastases! You take victories where you can get them in situations like this.

If Bella were my dog, I would use care in activities before surgery. I know it's tempting to go out for a last four-legged hike and that sort of thing. Dogs hide pain signals so well that it makes it easy for us to think they are capable of all their old activities. They fool us so well!

But do keep in mind the cancer is working hard to attack her body, so right now she needs all the strength she can get in order to make a full recovery after surgery. Amputation takes a lot out of the body so the more well-rested she is before surgery, the better. Instead of doing hard physical activities, consider some fun bucket list things like car rides to a burger joint for some take-out, or maybe to Starbucks for a pup-a-chino, things that won't cause her to put extra stress on her body.

When you decide what to do we would LOVE to see photos of your fun adventures! Keep us posted and holler with any questions OK?
