Background for those that don't know: Kender had her left rear leg amputated today. Vet does not have after hours care so I brought her home tonight. As soon as she got home, she was able to get her cone off. I sat with her for a while to let her have cone-free time. During that time, she peed all over herself. Didn't move to try to use the litter box...didn't even flinch when it happened. Almost like she didn't even realize it happened. Cleaned her up as best I could and got her blankets changed out. She was NOT happy about that. I want to just say this is from the anesthesia and pain meds, but I also don't want to ignore something potentially worrisome. I told myself I wasn't gonna freak out about every little thing...yet here I am!
And hopefully she keeps her cone on now...and I didn't get it too tight! I put the baby video monitor in there for now so that I can keep an eye on her, but I'll have to take it out soon when baby goes to bed. I wish she'd stop messing with it and just relax and rest

Sounds pretty normal to me for only being out of surgery about ..what...six, eight hours? Scary but not unexpected at all. These are all the things the owner usually doesn't see when they stay the first night in the hospital. She's drugged and with pain meds and still throwing off the anesthesia. If I recall, they gave her fluids before the surgery so she's probably not done peeingbyet! Be easy on yourself, okay? This almost impossible to "prepare" for emotionally whether you've worked at the vets or not.....this is YOUR kitty and you are worried and that's normal! Certainly, if you have any concerns, call the ER..I'm not a vet disclaimer!
I love that she was determined to get that cone off even through her pink elephant stage!
I know this part is so tough and certainly hard to watchand I know she'll amaze you as the recovery starts to take hold. Hang in there...it's not a pawty yet, but it will be soon!!!
Sending you lots of hugs!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
I wouldn't be overly concerned about it. She's probably super loopy on all the meds.
I also imagine she will quiet down soon. My guy stayed at the hospital overnight, but he's had other procedures under general anesthesia w/ lots of pain meds after, and from what I recall, every time he comes home, he's worked up and excited to be home (probably still really stoned), and then really settles down after a couple hours and sleeps.
Glad to hear her surgery went well and she's at home safe and sound with someone to take good care of her.
Love Vinny and his human, KJ! <3 xox

Thanks for the reassurance! Now that I think of it, she didn't care when she spilled her water on herself either. Silly cat...freaks out about a cone but doesn't care about dowsing herself in water or laying in pee lol.

Sally hit the nail on the head with the fluids. They probably ran a full liter if not two through her. They should have manually emptied her bladder immediately previous to surgery. After that, she was mostly likely too dopey from anesthesia to do it herself. The first chance she really got to do it, when she could really feel her bladder and the rest of her plumbing for the first time, she just went for it. Her lack of a reaction was a combination of anesthesia still in her system and whatever pain meds she's on. If she is, in fact, on a fentanyl patch like I think you previously said....she's high as a kite right now! Her back end is practically numb and her world is a ridiculous drug trip!
Expect a dopey cat who knocks into things, spills things, messes herself, and doesn't care for probably 12-24 (possibly up to 36) hours if she has a fentanyl patch, 8-12 hours for any other narcotic.
Right rear leg amp due to injury from unknown cause (but don't tell her she's missing her spare...yes HER!)

When I checked her this morning, her blanket was dry and there was urine in her litter box...hooray!!

Jill also peed all over herself her first night and second night in the hospital while I was there visiting. I wouldn't worry! And she probably she doesn't like the cone so it's making her fussy!!
Jill is a 9-year-old tuxedo kitty. She was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in June 2012 on her toe in her right hind leg. Her leg was amputated on 12/12/12 and she completed four rounds of chemo (2 of Carbo, 2 of Doxy) in April 2013. Yay for pee in the litter box! Never thought you'd be so excited to see it, huh?
