Katniss saw the Oncologist at Auburn U today. They had already done her leg analysis, but wanted to see how she's getting on in person.
So their recommendation is to go ahead with five doses of chemo. They are recommending Doxorubicin (sp?).
Her soft tissue sarcoma is a grade 1. So normally they would say she's good, just come in for some testing every three months.
But because of where it was located, she has a rare tumor. Of course. Because it's so close to the bone area, they are concerned about bone marrow invasion. If we opt to do nothing, and cancer is in there somewhere and rears its head any time in the near future, it could be worse than if we treat for it now because apparently this type likes to get into the lungs.
Anyway, I got lots of details and checked off my questions (from this site!) that they actually pretty much answered along the way.
It sounds like "hopefully" the side effects of the chemo should be really minor.
My really biggest concern, besides money (but that'll be OK - we got it), is that they probably will do an EKG and another chest x-ray just to clear her before treatment. Poor baby.
I'm going to call them tomorrow to get started first thing next week.
Thank you again to this site. HUGE help and wealth of information.
Thanks for the update. Having a plan is so helpful to get your head together and stay focused on the healing. You did great by talking with Auburn, and gathering facts to help her.
What's her mobility like these days?
As for the chest x-ray, don't waste that energy worrying about something that hasn't happened. It may or may not but right now the important thing is to celebrate Katniss in the here and now. She's such a gift!

Her mobility is awesome. The oncology team said they are so pleased with how well she's getting along on her leg. Bless her - she has this one place she loves to poop WAY up at the top of our front yard. And I walked with her up there yesterday. And it took us about 10 minutes to get back to the garage door. She was soooo tired. But she's doing so well, thank you for asking.
