I just thought I'd share Kami's story here as there are not many discussion threads on young puppies with osteosarcoma.
Kami always had health issues from the day we brought her home from the breeder - recessed vulva causing recurrent UTIs, eye infections, food allergies, anal gland issues. Her growth rate as a pup was quite rapid. When she was 1.5 years we noticed a slight limp of her left hind leg. Took her to the vet. Did x-rays. There was a slight fuzziness on the fibula. Vet thought it was a healing fracture on a non-weight bearing bone. However I had doubts about that because her limp didn't get any better, in fact it was getting worse. Went back about 3 weeks later. This time the vet did another xray with an open bone biopsy which confirmed osteosarcoma. We then went to the specialist hospital for her CT-scan and amputation. Lungs were clear on the CT-scan. Her tumour tissue was saved for her autologous immunotherapy vaccine (vaccine made from her own tumour cells). She recovered from the amputation so well with no issues at all. Heard her yelp once - likely phantom limb pain. But that was it. Her meds were meloxicam, paracetamol, and gabapentin. She started Carboplatin chemotherapy 3 weeks after amputation. No side effects whatsoever. She also had the autologous vaccine every week.
Then I heard what I thought was a single cough after coming back from a walk just before her second dose of chemotherapy. It didn't happen again. After the 3rd round of chemotherapy, the cough started again, randomly, about once a day. Then there was a huge lump in between her shoulder blades that came up within a few days. When she went in for her 4th round of chemo, the vet did an xray and a biopsy of the lump. Unfortunately the cancer had metastasized all over her lungs and her body. She didn't have the 4th round of chemo. The vet gave her 4 weeks. Kami only survived another two. So all in all, Kami only lived for 3 months from diagnosis, rather than the average 12 month survival time. But I think the cancer was already there 3 months before the diagnosis - so 6 months roughly.
Do I regret putting her through all this with her ended up dying within 3 months? Absolutely not. She had surgery, chemotherapy and immunotherapy. We gave her all opportunities available to fight this cancer. But it wasn't meant to be for Kami. She didn't want to die, but her body failed her exactly 1 week after her 2nd birthday.
I miss you Kami.
Your post has been approved and now your courageous journey that you and Kami have taken will be shared by others.
I know it took a lot to post here, yet you shared your stoy through your tears. ZThere is so much information that is so important to this community...... I was absolutely riveted to every word, as well as stunned at how quickly things took a downward spiral for your sweet Kami
Kami's earth .life had a lot of hurdles, yet I have no doubt she had more love, joy and happiness crammed into her short life than most dogs ever get over a much longer lifetime. Your devotion and dedication to her, as well as your unbreakable bond, comes shining through.
You absolutely gave her every chance possible, even above and beyond what many are able to do! Yes, this vicious disease is so cunning and brutal and sneaky and it had already planned it's devastating path. It didn't know it was up against a courageous Warrior dog who was willing to fight as long as she could, and the same goes for her humans.
Surrounding you with extra hugs and love

Ohhh I am so very, very sorry about Kami. You have my deepest condolences.
That took so much love and courage for you to share her story here, and we appreciate it more than you know. Her life and her cancer fight was not in vain, and she showed that dogs can still live out their days as beautifully as ever, loved and treasured with their favorite people.
Osteosarcoma in young dogs under five years old has a very low survival rate for some reason, even lower than the one year prognosis given to older dogs. It's a terrible disease for all but especially young pups.
Thank you for giving her a fighting chance, and showing us that through your raw grief you can still wrap your arms around the greater victory of having her presence in your life, even for a short time. She is a dog you will never forget, and her legacy will live and love on.
