Jasmine 2nd round chemo, chewed through IV, vet not concerned?

Have you experienced your animal chewing through the Caroplatin IV line?  Jasmine  had her 2nd round of chemo today, but I haven't picked her up yet to check on her.  Vet tech said she chewed through her IV at the end of the treatment.  So far no side effects, but am worried.

I haven't had much time to post updates, but Jasmine has recovered great on her amputation.  First round of chemo was more a learning experience for me on understanding Jasmine's symptoms.

Thanks,

Sherry

What sweet, sweet face and I'm sure she has a sweet spirit to match.

Don't have direct experience with your situation but perhaps others will. It seems that if it was at the end of the treatment especially it should be OK. It also seems to me that maybe someone should have been keeping whether eye on Ms. Jasmine!!! I would definitely talk with the vet about that! The very best to you and Jasmine and please let us know what the vet says about any concerns to watch for-----iIF any at all. Another thought that makes me think the bag was empty----I don't think k Jasmine would keep chewing IH she got a load of chemo in her mouth.

Wishing you both the best and sending loads of support, Sally and Happy Hannah

Sherry, I'm sorry this happened and am really curious as to the circumstances surrounding the event. Was it carbo in the line or something else?

I would ask them why Jasmine was left alone long enough for her to do this? I'm not a vet but as far as I understand and have witnessed a dog getting chemo, dogs aren't left alone during this procedure.

Also ask the vet, not staff, where the chemo went on her body and what signs to look for in the event of any external tissue reaction to the chemo itself.

Please try not to worry but do get every specific detail about this event. And make it clear to the vet that you don't want her left alone during the next procedures.

Let us know what happens, we'll be waiting for an update.

She's so cute!  I second what these ladies said: how was she left unattended?  Yikes!  Are you sure carbo was in the line at the time?  Maybe it was just saline?

Amputation 12/28/12.  Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. Very cute doggy.  I know Sassy's vet never ever left her unattended with any kind of line in here.  I sure hope there wasn't anything in the line.

Sherry, certainly check with your vet about what was in the line at the time she chewed through.  Our vet erred on the side of caution by giving two hours of fluid, 20 minutes of Carbo, then two more hours of fluid to help flush and protect the kidneys.  From what I've read on here, that is the standard admin protocol for some of the other chemos that can have more side effects, but not for Carbo b/c it is known to be a bit safer on the heart and kidneys.  I was always surprised to read others post about taking their dog in and 20 minutes later they were done when we had to stay four or five hours every time.  I think Dr. R just didn't like to take any chances.  In our case, I usually stayed with him but the one time I had to leave him I was told they would put him in a kennel during the before/after flushing periods and that someone would be sitting with him during the entire chemo admin.  If your vet is also giving the fluids before and after the admin, maybe that was the time that she chewed through?  Please keep us posted!

Zeus was a Husky mix diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 11.  A visible lung met and suspicious spot on his liver meant a poor prognosis-six weeks was our vet's best guess. We decided to fight for our boy and his right front leg was amputated on 12/1/11. We did six rounds of chemo, changed his diet and spoiled him completely rotten. We were blessed with 10 great months after diagnosis. Against the odds, the lung met remained a single met and grew very little over those months. A wonderful furbaby with the most gentle spirit, he fought with a strength that we never imagined he possessed. We have no regrets...

Zeus, that was real interesting the way your vet administered chemo and I'm going to mention it to mine. Jasmine may have just chewed through fluid line.

I love seeing Zeus's picture every time you make a post---t makes me smile. I love seeing all the photos!!

I would be much more concerned if your dog was getting Adriamycin since that is much more irritating although having said that it is not ideal for a dog to be chewing through any line!  Ingested plastic can sometimes cause vomiting but most dogs just chew stuff up and spit it out.

I have always given carbo through a small butterfly catheter over 10-20 minutes since that is the way our local oncologist gives it.  Some vets like to use an indwelling catheter plus IV fluids (that is the way that Adriamycin should always be given) so it really a matter of personal preference.

Jasmine is doing fine, but of course tired.  It sure does take alot out of her.

Sally, your response helped calm me down on my way to get Jasmine.  Thank you!

Your guess was correct...the IV bag was empty when she chewed through the line.  Thankfully!  The vet said they don't sit with Jasmine, but check on her every 15 minutes.  He said she was a perfect angel and doing fine each time they would check on her, but she was getting impatient towards the end of the bag.  So I think next time I will make sure I'm there at the end to take her home.  Because she ended up scratching her nose and her front paw somehow on the cage.  She isn't use to being crated.

Lisa, I asked him about the flush and found out he dilutes the Carbo. The IV takes 2 1/2 hours.  I guess I would want the IV out TOO if I had it in for 2 1/2 hours!  He says they'll have to do a cone next time.  I forgot to ask him about giving her something to make her relax?

You all are so helpful and am very thankful!  Jasmine is too!  Thanks for the compliments.  Jasmine does have a very sweet spirit and her sweet face had me melting at Hello! haha

She had a wonderful weekend playing outside with her ball for the first time after surgery...jumping and running just like before!  Made me happy and her too!  Can't believe I had a couple of friends say, "why don't you just put her down".

All for the love of Jasmine and all the other tripawds out there fighting!  What an incredible example they are to us humans!

Dilute the Carbo??? I am sorry then what is the purpose of giving the chemo?  Unless I am misunderstanding by what you mean dilute.  Are you meaning by giving fluids after the chemo?  My vet does use a cather but they are still there and still monitor. and Sassy had to be there all day.

I am concerned about the giving of a chemo with no one there and checking on her every 15 minutes a lot can happen in that time.

I'm glad you got it settled.  Let's hope they work around this problem next time and don't let her get into trouble!

Rest up, Jasmine!  You are SO darling!

Whew!! I think I heard your sigh of relief all the way here I Virginia---and you probably heard our collective sigh of relief also!! This journey is enough of a roller coaster as it is without something happening that absolutely never should happen!! We've all learned from your experience though and we are all extra diligent in making sure our loved ones are indeed monitored during the chemo process..

I love seeing that sweet face and I understand how she had you at "hello". All the photos--all of them--touch my soul as their personality and heart comes through with everyone posted. You are doing a great job overseeing Jasmine's care and she clearly knows she's loved.

Surrounding you with peace and calm, Sally and Happy Hannah

Oh I'm so glad Jasmine is OK! That's a relief.

Pam, thanks for your feedback, it's GREATLY appreciated. You said it's a matter of personal preference as to the method used for giving the chemo. When we saw carbo given to a dog in one onco clinic, it was injected as you said you give it, and it took about 10 minutes. If IV fluids are given along with the chemo, does that make it less effective?
