Well, my girl is having some trouble with her hind leg strength. She's definitely weaker as she gets older and the knee injury robbed her of some strength for sure, but I think this round of Palladia is hitting her harder for whatever reason ... just not the tumor. We are definitely seeing it shrink, just not as quickly as when we first treated it. Of course, it blew up like a dang balloon and started larger this time - still not sure how that happened - but she also weighs about 4 pounds less so the inreased frequency of the same mg dosage plus reduced muscle mass from the knee problems is likely just taking its toll.
I already reported the weakness to the oncologist and she asked that I let her know should it worsen, so I'll be calling in tomorrow (though I think she is off on Mondays). All of this said, I decided Izzy should have some peanut butter in her Kong between naps.Â
ÂTrue to herself, she bared her teeth when her furry sister tried to move in ... that's my saucy old girl ... and worked on that kong until she literally was panting. My silly, hungry pup.Â
As you can see, she is ready for Valentine's day. I'm very sad that I have a vacation to Ireland planned in a couple of weeks - I hate leaving when she is having trouble - but hope that her poppa will be vigilant and take good care of her while I'm gone.
Sorry that the photos are blurry, but you get the idea anyway.Â
I'm hoping the vet has some ideas on what to do to help with the weakness ... I really would like her to be more stable before I leave (and I'm gone for 10 days - booooo) so please cross your fingers or paws or whatever your "good luck" ritual is!
Thanks everybody!Â
Momma to the world's most beautiful American Bulldog, Izzy!! Lost her front leg to OSA 9/18/15. Diagnosed w MCT in June 2016. Celebrated her 1 year ampuversary with knee surgery on 9/18/16! MCT recurrence in Dec 2016. Happy & hungry til nearly 14, earning her wings on 7/31/17.
Nothing like a Kong filled with peanut butter to remind you that Izzy is still being Izzy! And Izzy still kmows how to always look so very comfy when she's on her pretty bed.
Ueah, seems to me that if she's lost weight, then the Palladia dose should be reduced.
Whether the Palladia is shrinking the tumor or not, if it is interfering with her quality, maybe the Vet can come up with an alternative, reduced amount, etc. Guess the Vet will do blood work?
It may be that Izzy is just "slowing down" like all saucy old girls do!!
No matter what, Izzy is truly one of THE most loved, spoiled and most cared for pups on the Planet! And I have no doubt you and Izzy have trained Poppa to do all of that very well while you go on your trip!
Let us know how the check up goes. In the meantime, more peanut butter Kongs for Izzy!!! WAIT!! Scratch that! Kongs filled with ICE CREAM!!! Izzy needs a Kong filled with ICE CREAM! 🙂
Love!!

One of the side effects of palladia is lameness, I remember reading about it when I was considering putting quad-pug Tani on it for her mast cell tumors. I don't remember how common it was, something to ask your oncologist.
I hope it's just that Izzy is feeling her age a bit! What supplements do you have her on? I had Tani on K9 Immunity Plus. I can't say if it helped her mast cell cancer, although she lived with it for more than 7 years, but it definitely helped her energy level.
