Hi All,

Townes had his surgery 2 days ago. Is this bruising normal? The bruising you see is under the incision and on his thigh and stomach.

Dont worry about the bruising.  This is totally normal.  I know it looks frightening but Cadence had the same type of bruising.  I think it took about a week to go away.  The incision looks great.

I'm glad Michele responded, because I wasn't sure about the bruising, Jill didn't have bruising like that but she was SOOOOOO swollen!!!!  Great looking incision for sure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jill is a 9-year-old tuxedo kitty. She was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in June 2012 on her toe in her right hind leg. Her leg was amputated on 12/12/12 and she completed four rounds of chemo (2 of Carbo, 2 of Doxy) in April 2013. Libby's bruising was red also.  Not quite that red, but she's a brown dog so her skin is a bit darker to begin with.  I actually thought it was razor burn until I read through some of these posts.  It doesn't take long for it to disappear.  I agree, the incision looks good.

Liberty (Libby) was diagnosed with OSA on 1-22-13.  Right front amputation on 1-31-13. No IV Chemo. Metronomic Therapy started 2-19-13 along with supplements and some home cooking. Lungs clear until 1-06-14.  She's still her happy, hoppy, bossy self.  Living the dog life to the fullest and a proud Winter Warrior. :) RIP my Libby 4-21-03 to 3-19-14

We're not vets but that does look typical. We've been told that as long as the bruising isn't dark brown in color it's probably OK. Is there any oozing or discharge?

P.S. Townes, we are curious...are you named after Townes Van Zant the musician?

No there doesn't seem to be any oozing or discharge. And yes Townes is named after Mr. Van Zandt. You can probably guess who his sister EmmyLou is named after. Thanks for the replies folks.

Yep, that looks a lot like Happy Hannah's site only the stitches weren't that good! Hannah was very discolored and very red for quite awhile and swollen. Yeah, I think not having any seepage is reassuring and if it's not smelly either that's supposed to mean no infection

Townes looks good and I know that's a relief to you.

Take care of each other, Sally and Happy Hannah

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Kermit's was very red/purple & angry-looking for several days too, but it didn't seem to bother him.

Yep!  That's how Jackson's was.  It was reddest/purple-ish nearest his man parts...  The blood pools in the lowest hanging places.  Restricting movement will help, but regulating that is a fine line.  So long as there aren't eruptions or leakage, I think you're fine.  It sure looks nice and clean, though!

Wishing you a speedy, safe recovery!

ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12.  Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ!  No side effects.  We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments.  He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors!  Our love. Our funny little guy!

Hello,

As most others have indicated, the swelling, bruising and red/purple is normal. Tahoe's, surprisingly, was not too discoloured but I was icing the incision using a frozen bag of pees every 4-6 hrs, on for 20 minutes and ensuring there was a towel or shirt between frozen pees and his fur.

He responded well to the icing very well, bringing down the swelling and discolouration within 4-5 days post amp.

Hang in there and use the support here if you have any questions or concerns. Believe it or not, things will get easier.

Icing will help reduce swelling and ease pain while heat can help increase circulation to expedite healing. Check out the Bella's Hot/Cold Pain Relief Pack review in the Gear blog for more treatment tips.

Hehehehehe... Gotta love autocorrect... I would recommend a bag of PEAS over a bag of PEES, but I suppose whatever's in your freezer will work! laughing clownlaughing
