Im not sure if prednisone causes weight loss but cancer can sometimes cause a loss in appetite. Is prednisone the only medicine he's on? Is he eating ok, his normal amount? If his appetite is decreasing, you can try any of the recipes for Satin Balls:

Or some extra full fat peanut butter or cream cheese (high calorie treats). My Jake lost a ton of weight, it was a battle for weeks trying to get him to eat. I don't know really know the answer as to what may be causing it but there are lots of tricks to get calories in them.

Ty had trouble with this. The vet said sometimes Prednisone causes muscle wasting especially in the head. He had a bony head and butt. His head bone in the center stuck straight up. I called him my little dinosaur. The Pred actually increased his appetite a bit. It is a catch22, they need the meds, but the weight loss is hard to watch. I tried to decrease the Prednisone a bit because of this, but he crashed and we went back up to the origional dosage. He also was on 20 mg 2 x day. I never did try the satin balls, but I imagine they would get gobbled up. If he isn't eating, sometimes a bit of Mirtzapine can help.
TY GUY, Best Black Lab ever! Diagnosed and had amp in January, 2014. Kicked MRSA's butt. Earned his angel wings on April 16, 2014. Run Free my boy and don't forget a shoe. Ty is a proud member of the " April Angels". Ty sent us Daryl, a Tripawd rescue in Sept. of 2016. Daryl is 5 +or -. We are also Pawrents to Chandler, a Border Collie mix who is 15 and 1/2, Lucy, a Corgi who is 7, 2 minis, 2 horses, and a feisty cat named Zoe. Zoe had a non skeletal Osteosarcoma removed in July 2015. No Chemo, she was at least 16. She is going strong although she is now completely blind. She is now close to 20 and her hobbies are eating and sleeping in front of her personal heater.
Good advice from LORI and ELIZABETH.
Yep I think that bonehead look happens sometimes with Pred and even the stupid piece of crap disease. It's not anything that is necessarily painful, we humans just don t like it. The dogs still think they look gorgeous!.
Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
That's weird because with humans the pred typically causes a puffy "moon face" and weight gain! But I think it can more rarely also cause weight loss.

He eats and eats. His face is getting so bony and his spine sticks out and his butt bones stick out. I found another tumor in his stomach. We're not going to have the vet send out the sample of the one she aspirated the other day. We don't need to find out what kind of Cancer although my curiosity thinks that we should find out. Any ideas what kind it could be?
So sorry to hear Marshall continues to have problems...poor fella can't seem to catch a darn break.... Anyway, my Leland had the muscle wasting in his head/neck going on prior to the prednisone. Our vet informed us that it was a sign of an autoimmune disorder (the immune system gets out of whack and starts attacking the body instead of a disease) which is why Leland had the muscle wasting. The vet placed him on prednisone to suppress the immune system so it would stop attacking the body. Well, I'm no vet but the way our vet explained it made sense.
It's so hard to tell what is really going on because Marshall is battling so much right now with the cancer.
Anyway, I'm be keeping Marshall in my thoughts.

May you finally be healthy and running free at the Rainbow Bridge. Until we meet again my sweet boy!
How's Marshall today?
Those lumps could be anything, only a biopsy can tell. But since you aren't going to do one, focus instead on Marshall and giving him as best a quality of life as you can right now. I know it's so hard. You are doing your best, that is clear.
One of the things I would constantly ask myself when Jerry was at these stages in cancer, was, "How is he today? Is he himself? Is he doing all that he loves to do, even if it's just little bits here and there? Is he in a way that I want to remember him?" These are all quality of life questions that you can ask yourself throughout the day, to try to understand where Marshall is at. It's a fine line between allowing our pets to enjoy every minute they have left, versus just existing for the sake of existing. We as pet parents don't like to think about that, but as guardians of our pets it's just what we gotta do. It's a hard place to be in for sure. We'll do all we can to help you.
