So, I've read over the cold/heat article & i have a couple of questions.
Right now, I am icing 3x a day, for 15 mins which is what the discharge papers say. I can no longer rely on them for instructions (and that's another story and it's been a really long day).
Am I okay to ice more than just 3x? With making sure that the incision stays dry. Basically, when would I be overdoing it?
Icing seems to really make him feel better because he falls asleep right after! Common sense tells me I am okay to apply it more than just 3x, but I just want to 100% be sure I am doing the right thing. Thank you all!
Have to chuckle a bit as there are so many variations depending on the individual surgeons. I think it also depends on how much swelling is involved and for how long.
Not the same surgery, but when my tripawd had TPLO surgery on o e of the remaining legs, he was to be iced three times a day, but for only about five minutes each time. And that was fine with me. Unlike your sweet pup, he hated it!
How is his swelling and bruising? I know it's hard to guage what's excessive and what's "normal".
It's good that the icing relaxes him, but I'm sure it's also very calming just having you by his side being so attentive .
Anyway, that's my 1 cent worth.

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
That's so wonderful that he enjoys it. I say it can't hurt to do it several times a day as long as 1) you have a towel between the ice pack and his body, and 2) you aren't leaving it longer than the instructions say to do.
What a good boy!

beny55, I don't think he has much swelling. At least not that I can see & his bruising is pretty bad! I can tell he feels relief from the ice.
We had to go back to the vet's today so he could get a pain patch put on again, so I'm sure the doctor looked it over & didn't say anything about it. So we are good!
