I hope today's visit had some decent news. And of course, that Sadie got her badger claws taken care of. Just thinking of you guys today.
Adelaide is a young tripawd Husky, from an injury. Her amp was on 10/1/12. She has 4 sisters, Aissa (a senior border collie/chow), Maggie May (a puppy Great Pyrenees), Mathilde and Morrigan and 1 baby brother, Bagheera. We are all watched over by our angel Brendol, who was dx with OSA 1/30/13, amp on 2/6/13, and left us on 8/20/13.
You can read their stories at http://adelaide.tripawds.com and http://brendol.tripawds.com
I think I'd be doing exactly what you are doing in this situation. Sam's not making it easy or obvious and wants you to guess, so he can play coy and you can use technology. I hope you get answers; I hope they're positive answers, but I know this is a crap shoot.
I see that your husband and mine are identical twins. Mine is also an engineer and if he ever agreed with me over a dog thing, I would be in a panic. A major dog thing, anyway. Typical dog things I don't even bring up because they are not in his domain. Unless it's Evelyn. She's different. But I digress...
Maybe Sampson will allow you to hand feed him a hot dog tonight. Have you tried fine china, colorful plastic plates or the kids' plates shaped like animals? Would he eat it from a whale? Would he eat it in a pail? Would he eat on a plate of blue? Would he eat it in the loo?
Keep on keepin' on, Sampson, but try to do it a little more helpfully.

From abandoned puppy to Tripawd Warrior Dude, Dakota became one of the 2011 February Furballs due to STS. Our incredibly sweet friend lived with grace and dignity till he impulsively raced over the Bridge on 12-15-12.

Adding my wishes for good, manageable results. The husband/wife disconnect is part of what my girlfriends and I refer to as "the gene pool issue". Which does explain an awful lot of things, but also provides a built-in excuse that annoys me.
Maybe a Dr. Suess reading to help his eating...see Shari's post above.
