I am wondering whether anyone knows anything about this. Hyperalgesia is due to reaction to opiate medications like Tramadol, Rimadyl, and Hydromorphone. I think my dog was reacting to these, and experienced HEAVY panting, aggitation, and just terrible reaction. The vets thought it was the pain, but then when on a different med, it has begun to reduce. She is now on Gabapentin, but not quite doing the entire trick. I am afraid to give her any Rimadyl, which seems to cause more trouble. I also gave her some magnesium which is supposed to help with this and I did it just guessing it would help, and it did seem to. But, don't know how much is O.K. to give. Anyone else have experience with this??

Hi Wendy!! And how did I know Wendy's name? Because we just got off the phone from her Tripawds Helpline call!
Just want to welcome you again to the family and to remind you we are all here walking by your side! You are not on this journey alone!
As of this posting, Maize, an amazing 14 yr. young pup is resting comfortably now that she is off the synthetic morphine (?).
Wendy, I see from your above post she is off Rimadyl also. Do check with your vet about that. It's a good anti-inflammatory and she needs that right now.
Stay connected to us and stay in touch with her vet about managing her pain.
Maize sounds like a delightful girl and we look forward to hearing more about this sweet girl and celebrating her victories.
And by the way...YAAAAAAAAAY FOR PEE!!! Yep, we celebrate anything around here!! And she's eating some and drinking too..all good signs.
Sending hugs to you and Maize! Hang in there! You're doing great!
Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle too!
Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
Hello Wendy, I'm glad you posted and shared this important topic. We have a great article by Dr. Mike Petty, a world-renowned leader in vet pain management , all about hyperalgesia:
Vet Expert Dr. Mike Petty Shares Tripawd Amputation Pain, Rehab Care Tips
It sounds like your vet is really up on pain management , not too many new members have heard the term hyperalgesia before and I didn't even know it until meeting Dr. Petty. Work with your vet to come up with a pain management protocol that works for your pup and she'll be well on her way to recovery. Keep us posted OK? We're here for you.
