I could be wrong on this, and some please correct me if I am, but I believe cold is more for acute pain, like a sprained ankle, or to bring down swelling. Warmth is best for easing general aches and tiredness. I've never done this with the dog tho... Only with the hubster. 🙂

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. This post about our experience with Bella's Pain Pack explains it all:
So, when should you use heat or cold to treat pain in your pet?
Since most people don’t understand dog talk. I suggest following the advice of physiologists who practice sports medicine:
- If there is swelling and pain use ice.
- If there is no swelling, but stiffness is present use heat.
- If this is an acute injury (within first 6 weeks) use ice.
- When in doubt, use ice.
