YAAAAAAAAAYYY. Surgery is over and she's resting comfortably, and seeing a few pink.elephants by.now too!

TRY and get some sleep.while.she's at the vets...you may not get much sleep for a few.noghts when Ava comes home!

You lrobbly already have your house prelared, but you'll want non-slip scatter rugs if you have hardwoods for traction , I'm sure yoh already have raised food.and water bowls, a supportive bed that is not too swuishy as that makes it hard for them to sta.d without slipping. Check out the Big Barker .Dog.Bed here. It's made.specifically for.large.beds and provides support.and.holds.it.shape like no.others.

When you pick her up, don't even look.at her incision, just look into thise beautiful druggy eyes snd praise her and tell her what a good girl.she is!

You will be amazed at how well she handles.pooping.and peeing! And female front leg amps have it a little easier when it comes to bathroom chores than males. Squatting versus lifting a leg...sometimes being a gitl has its advantages!way-cool

Until she comes home, stuff your faces with tons and tons of chocolates.....it wil l hel keel you calm...or not!

Just remember, we are all here by y our side on t h is crazy journey.....you are not alone. Ava will get her sparkle back, she will be pain free, and she will be getting more spoiling and loving than you ever thought possible!

Sounds like you have a delightful pack and we can't wait to see pictures of everybody!!

Immerse yourselves in the peace f knowing that all is well.......ahhhh....nice feeling isn't it?

Yay!  I'm so glad the surgery went well!  I'm sure the wait to see her will seem like forever.  Like Sally said, make sure you're getting some rest!

Unfortunately, I can't offer a whole lot of pointers since my tripawd is a 14 yo kitty with a rear leg amp.  But she came home the same day as her surgery and has done great since!  Today marks one week since her surgery.  She only went pee outside her litter box once a few hours after getting home and that was likely due to being so doped up still.  While I'm sure the recovery for a Great Dane will be a little longer and require more assistance, I'm sure she'll do great :D

You might consider copying/pasting your last reply as a new post with a topic about post-surgery care for more exposure and replies :)

Yay for the surgery being over! That's fantastic. I'm glad to hear they're keeping her an extra day, since larger dogs can have a few more challenges in getting around at first. Sounds like she's getting the great care she needs for a fantastic homecoming. Try not to panic about not seeing her at the clinic, oftentimes it really stresses out the patient after their human leaves, it's hard, but it can be better to wait until you go pick her up.

The biggest thing you can do is to maintain a pawsitive attitude. You may find the next two weeks has some ups and downs, but you CAN get through this. Don't compare her recovery to anyone else's, remember she is unique and has her own journey. Just be strong and she will follow your lead.

Have you checked out Jerry's Required Reading List yet? Make a point to do that if you haven't already, it will help you. Also, consider starting a new topic so we can follow along and help OK?

Rest up today, she'll be home before you know it!

We finally got to see our big girl today we had to wait until 5pm after all the vet appointments were over. they brought us to an examination room and about 5 minutes later Ava came wobbling in with a big huge bandage wrapped around her entire body.. It was a bit of a shock at first and we were all so nervous not knowing what to expect, but then it just just overwhelmed us that we were finally with her. She was certainly drugged up to say the least and when they tried to lay her down she yelped so loud our hearts just broke. but finally she settled down (on her incision side which made me cringe) and for about 45 min she just kind of whimpered and seemed to be just completely out of it. But we gave her all kinds of love and she seemed to be slowly waking out of the drugs, hers eyes opened fully and she realized who was around her and while she couldn't move her body she moved her head to see who was on the floor with her and we got one small wag of that enormous tail. After about 15 minutes she was fully awake but still just kind of whimpering, and as she tried to right herself it was obviously very painful for her so she just had to lay in the same position. We were afraid to help her thinking we might do more harm then good. My wife being the smart one brought a bag of delicious treats and when she heard the bag rustle out of the pocketbook she had that look that said "I know that sound where are my Treats" and for about a half hour she devoured treat after treat (They are all natural Banana wrapped with chicken...no crappy store bought treats for this girl) she started to wag her tail more and more and even gave us her paw a few times, her left paw was the paw she'd always give everyone to melt their hearts but she doesn't have that one to give anymore, but like the sweetheart she is she found a way to still melt our hearts. We sat with her for quite a few hours and thought it best to let her get some rest it was so hard to leave her there but we knew it was for the best. We all said our positive and extremely wet goodbys (how could you not cry your eyes out) my wife and daughter left before me and I sat for an extra 10 minutes or so waiting for the vet techs to come and get her and i talked to her and made sure she knew that this was for the best and while she was in pain now at least this pain would go away not like pain she had in her before, and that her entire pack both human and dog would be there for her every single step of the way, and as dog lovers we all know she understood. She was whimpering a lot at this point but my heart tells me it was because she knew we were leaving and she just wanted to come home ( yeah I know she was in pain too) but the look in her eyes spoke volumes to me. so as i was leaving they asked if she ate any of the food they gave us and I told them no she didin't but she ate the treats and they asked if I would leave the bag which of course I did and told them that she probably wouldn't eat the dog food they were offering to her, so they asked what would she eat I told them and they said if I wanted to pick some up so they could get some food in her. So I headed off to the deli picked up a pound of turkey breast and a pound of very rare roast beef not her regular diet but two things she loves) brought them back to her with hopes that when I call this morning she will have eaten well. All in all a crazy emotional day, and after seeing her with two vet techs who are trained to moved dogs around after surgery we are still very scared about what to do when we get her home. we of course want her home as soon as possible but want to make sure we can take care of her properly. you all said for us to get some sleep but here I am at 3 in the morning typing away(I tried it just didn't work). I know it's going to be a tough few weeks but they are weeks of healing and recovery both both for Ava and frankly my family as well and as each day goes by we get closer and closer to having our big girl back without the pain she endured each day and that particular light at the end of this tunnel is worth every second of everything that we have no idea about what we are doing but our love for this big beautiful girl will guide us every step of the way and whatever mistakes we make they will be made with caring, compassion and tons of love for a soul that has brought so  much joy into our lives.

It was suggested to take this into the postop and recovery section so thats what I'm going to do, I hope you all still follow along on this journey with us, frankly you have all been a blessing to me and my family (and we don't even know who you are) and we will continue to need your support because this Sh*t ain't easy to go through alone...thank you all from the bottom of my families collective hearts.

Steven, Michele, Carlo, Gianna, luca, Lola, Ava,Tessa

See you in post-op and recovery

YAAAAAAAAAAY!!!! We've got tail wags, we've got eating, we've got recognizing the sound of the treat bag, we've got a great update! And I have quite a few happy tears streaming down my face! I was glued to every single word in this update, just waiting and waiting to get a little morsel of good news and you and Ava did not disappoint!!!

This was a great visit on so many levles....you've seen the effect of the drugs as far as being loopy...you've heard the whimpering...you've heard the yells...you've seen the difficulty with mobility. And you are now a little more accustomed to the "normalcy" of recovery and you won't find these behaviors as scaw.. You WILL be able to handle these challenges...ABSOLUTELY you will!

And she will be better off at home as soon as you can make that happen. I have no doubt some of her whimpering as you were preparing to leave was because she wanted to go home!

Yeah, this is just an awful time. And you know what? It will also be the best of times...really, it will! You think you've been loving and spoiling Ava before.....ha! You "ain't seen nuttin'yet"!!! And you will master the art of living in the present and being more dog...just like Ava. No fears, no worries, no regrets, just loving being together in the now!

Look forward to the next update. She may not eat her turkey without you at her dinner table!!! Let us know how her feast went!

And you do know us........we are you.......we've been there....we understand the bond and devotion you and your fami l y have with Ava like know others can...We are all family here and we al l are cheering for Ava. If you listen closely I think you can hear us! Yeah, that clamor in the background...that's us cheering!

Sending love and hugs to all!

On our way to pick her up and bring her home. Great news from the vet today she actually stood on her own and took two or three steps on her own, the vet was so amazed. what happened was as he was making his rounds he said good morning to Ava and he watched as she struggled to stand and with effort and determination she stood all on her own and tried a few steps to say good morning back to the vet. I was overwhelmed with happiness at that moment(and i was at a meeting with my entire staff at work and they were very happy for her also. So here we go on the way out the door right now to bring home our big girl, man oh man are her pack mates going to be excited to see her, but I know we'll have to keep that to a dull roar. Ok now we are really leaving.

Keep you posted.

What a difference a day makes!!! The day after surgery we sat and wondered how we were going to take care of her. After spending a couple of hours with her and hearing her whimper and barely able to lift her head we were very concerned that we weren't prepared and thats when I sent out that somewhat frantic post asking all of you for help ( and all your advice was great thank you) So when we came home that night we sat and talked and we we're scared we want to do everything we can to help her but at 160lbs thats not so easy we watched two vet techs struggle with her size and said these people do this everyday how the hell are we going to manage and not hurt her. well as you can imagine we got virtually no sleep at all that night.

Now it's the big day Ava is coming home, we spent the entire day preparing the house for her moving furniture around, putting runners down everywhere, we had to rearrange the entire garage because we had a ramp built for her in there and in order to minimize the grade it had to be long enough. So now the house is prepared as best as we could, but the question remained in the back of our minds...were we prepared?

It's about 4pm at this point and it's time to go get our girl. It was a pretty silent ride to the hospital. when we arrive they are going over the bill and all the business side of the surgery (i wasn't paying one bit of attention...i just asked how much and please get me to my dog) At that point they placed us in an exam room and the vet came in and was going over the meds and what we could expect and and how to deal with things, at that point I heard this kind of excited panting and I knew it was her and suddenly...BOOM... the door bursts open and in bounds Ava with a vet tech in tow, not only was her tail wagging her entire body was wagging she was WALKING ON HER OWN, she was crying but this time not in pain but pure joy to see us all there she was nuzzleing, and licking (even the vet I guess she really liked him) but most amazingly she was walking, going to the right, to the left , backing up...the day before she could barely move (lots of drugs I know) so the vet tries now to explain to me about how to use the harness to help support her weight (Good luck with that I thought...lol) it's now time to leave the hospital I have the harness wrapped around her, we have to go across the Triage are and go through the waiting room (which unfortunately was packed to the brim) the floors were all vinyl and slippery so he said go slow with her and support her weight, so I said "Of Course" So they opened the door to the exam room and whooosh there goes Ava with me trying to keep up with the harness...yeah that didn't work out to well for me...lol...I was just a rag doll in tow. All the triage nurses were saying goodbye to her (I think her size had an impact on them..they all knew her name) but the most amazing part was hitting the waiting room, when she entered that room peoples jaws hit the ground at first I think because of her size but then they realized this was a huge Great Dane Tripaw who just happen to be dragging a human behind her. The looks went from Wow...to absolutely amazed...everyone was wishing her well and not a single eye was was anywhere except on her, and there were a few wet eyes as well, she was so happy and excited, some people even came outside and offered to help get her in the Minivan ( I never had a minivan...I do now...and it's pretty cool...lol) she was a little nervous getting in so we helped her and she settled right in. the ride home was uneventful luckily.

So as we get about two minutes from my house she sits up and knows she is almost home, when I pull up her tail is wagging she pants a little heavier, she's ready to be home. I quickly get out and get my other dogs outside. as soon as we get the door to the van (I now call it the "Van") open out she goes straight to the garage up the ramp and into the house and right to her food and water bowls, then she looks up and sees her pack mates off the deck down by the pool patio and her tail and their tails and her cries and their cries start all at once...it was beyond overwhelming (I have a feeling I'm going to be using that word a lot) at this point we can't keep them apart any longer so we let them in...what a reunion licking, and lots of butt smelling and crying and they stopped for a second and it was like they all knew ok something isn't 100% right and they all start sniffing her incision and they seemed to relax except my ST.Bernard she the Mom of the house and started barking at the other two as if to say "Stay away I got this" and thats exactly what she meant she'd let go by her but if they lingered to long she'd bark or come over and push them away.

So remember the ramp we had built in the garage we built it in there because it the place in my house where there is the least amount of stairs (only two) where she used to going down 6 stairs off the deck about 40 ft of pool patio and 3 mores stairs off the patio into the yard, we figured there's no way she can do that right away or maybe ever again, so the idea for the garage ramp seemed like a good one. well I'm here to tell you when a 160lb Great dane wants to do something even with only 3 legs you don't have much of a choice but to accomodate. She walked up to the back door and i thought maybe she just wants to lay on the deck (which she loves to do) nope to she wanted to go into the yard her way so i quickly got he harness to help her. she struggled bit with the first three stairs but the next three she went right, then right across the patio and down the next three stairs into the yard. Peeing is still not wasn't easy she squatted and fro about 2 or 3 seconds had it then kind of lost balance so we really needed to help her at that point. she rested for a few minutes and back up the patio stairs, the deck and time to relax for a while. She's not eating all that well but drinking tons and tons of water. But she seems to be a very happy girl again.

Sorry for the long version of this (it's cathartic for me) and I also want remember every second of this journey with her. Thank you for giving me the forum to be able to share this incredible insight into life that we as humans never seem to understand. i will talk to my children and use these moments with her as lessons that i pray they take with them into their lives and their childrens lives one day. That life someday's will be up and other days will be in the toilet so to speak, but understand that we cannot change was has past and we can only hope for a better tomorrow, but what we can control are each and very moment that we are living in right now.

I'll keep you all posted...thank you again.

What an amazing update!! I kept having to stop part way through to wipe my eyes to keep reading. What an amazing pack you have!! I love how "mama dog" kept the others in line. Too cute! Way to go Ava!! I hope she doesn't overdo it in her excitement. But like you said, there's not too much you can do to stop a dog like that who is determined to do something :D She's got spirit, for sure!

clapYAAAAY! Oh my gosh I'm glad I waited till I had a minute to sit down and read every word of your post, it is a WONDERFUL reunion story and update! You all did GREAT and what a pawesome vet team you have on your side, please give them a big 3-paws up from us (you can't imagine how many Tripawd members' old vets have told them that even a 100# dog wouldn't do well on 3 legs and they should just forget about it). Feel free to put their info in our "Veterinary Referrals" Forum, i know there will be another giant breed dog pawrent from your area looking for help some day.

Thank you so much for taking time to share your emotions and everything that happened the day you picked up your beautiful, brave girl. When you have a sec, it would be great if you could share this story and other progress in "Size and Age Matters," that's where the big dawgs play!

Hope you're having a good week, keep us posted.
