Hello,
My name is melissa. I have a 5 year old Boxer named Dakota. Here's a little background.
Dakota first started limping in May 2009 at first it was thought to be valley fever since originally he lived in arizona with my in laws. After a corse of treatment for valley fever he got no better acutally he got worse. So then the biopsy....scary time ...came back that he had osteosarcoma on his right front leg. we went to several vets and specialists and we were told there was no hope, the typical 3-6 months and chemo wasn't an option for us. So we made the decision to amputate so on August 31st 2009 his front right was taken off. He did awesome!!!! He was up the day of the surgery and majorly inproved. So we were told like i'm sure most of you were that the marker is 6 months, if the cancer didn't spread to the lung or anywhere else after 6 months we could rest a little easier. We are now just about 6 months from his surgery. we recently had a set back which was totally unexpected !!!! 2 weeks ago he started yelping when he would bark of course we rushed him to the vet only to have dakota act just fine at the vet . the vet gave him a complete physical and said there was nothing he could find wrong. That was thursday feb 4th 2010. So we went home completly relived i just thought i was crazy ( these things happen !!! LOL) but on friday morning a week later 02/12/2010 Dakota stopped eating, drinking and he was falling over so weak. SO again we rush to the vet this time not so lucky. The vet took a chest xray and saw that his chest cavity was full of blood. So immediate panic set in, then we were not given a clear reason why. Dakota falls alot on his chest so it was either he fell and burst a blood vessel in his chest from the trama or GET THIS a completly unrealted type of cancer was attacking him. So we came home defeated with meds to try for a week. He was put on lasik to expell the fluid, predgisone for his lungs and antiboitics ( he had a very very slight white cell elevation) and we have a appt on monday feb 22 2010 to have addl chext xrays and bloodwork to be taken. Has anyone shared a similar story?? My vet says that IF this is cancer in his chest it is no way no how realted to the osteosarcoma and my vet said that he would be the unluckiest dog in the world for it to be another cancer.. ANY input is welcome.. We fought too hard for this little boy to be sick from another cancer monster!!! Thank you in advance for listening to our story and thank you for the input.
Oh, Melissa, my heart breaks for you. What an ordeal. I have no words of wisdom, but want to offer you any support I can give. My mantra is to not panic until it is time, and it isn't time until you know EXACTLY what you are dealing with. Enjoy your weekend with Dakota, share some special time together and deal with Monday when it gets here.
Sending lots of healing thoughts for Dakota, and calming thoughts for you. Keeping you and Dakota in my mind so you won't be alone.

Thank you for joining and sharing Dakota's story. We are sorry to hear about his latest issues. The doctor doesn't believe it is burst lung met(s)?

nope as far as the doctor can see there is no sign of any met's in the lungs he said they looked extremely clear. Vet was first worried about heart failure so he aspriated the chest cavity to make sure it wasn't just fluid backing up and found it was blood. He said there is no evidence of mets. and since the medicine he is doing great eating drinking perfect happy as can be.
Melissa,
I'm sorry I don't have any words of advice as far as what could be causing these problems for Dakota. However, although it is easier said than done, try not to worry. If it something easily taken care of you have wasted precious time with Dakota while worrying. If it another cancer worrying will not help. I prefer the Scarlet O'Hare method of 'I'll think about that tomorrow.' (Not that I am good at it, but I try.)

Hi Melissa,
Welcome to the Tripawds family... I'm sorry that Dakota was diagnosed with OS and had her leg amputated... but I am so happy to hear that he is still around, so many months later!! Sorry to hear about this latest setback... I'm glad that they don't see any mets in Dakota's lungs... and I hope that all the meds helps to make Dakota start feeling better soon! I know how panicked we all are whenever anything goes wrong with our babies after their diagnosis... we're always waiting... for the other shoe to drop! Keep us posted to how Dakota is doing...
Sending you a big hug!!

Jake, 10yr old golden retriever (fractured his front right leg on 9/1, bone biopsy revealed osteosarcoma on 9/10, amputation on 9/17) and his family Marguerite, Jacques and Wolfie, 5yr old german shepherd and the newest addition to the family, Nala, a 7mth old Bengal mix kittie. Jake lost his battle on 11/9/2009, almost 8 weeks after his surgery. We will never forget our sweet golden angel… http://jakesjou.....ipawds.com ….. CANCER SUCKS!
Was the blood free in his chest or surrounding his heart? Large breed dogs can develop hemangiosarcoma in the right atrium of the heart which then bleeds and causes heart compression due to the pericardial lining. It is most common in German Shepherds or Goldens but any dog can have this. Your vet would have had to tap the heart sac to give relief.
If the blood was free in the chest then I would suspect a burst lung met, even if one was not seen on an xray. I guess that the best bet would be to do a follow-up xray and maybe an echocardiogram to see how your dog reacted to the meds.
